Flickering Lights

Featured Replies

Hi,

All the lights in the car flicker when the engine is running, even the lcd displays in the dials, when ever i turn the wheel they practically go off and also when i press the brake pedal (assuming because the brake lights come on).

And the risk of sounding stoopid am i right in assuming that its just the battery, although i have just had it on charge all day and went from half to full and still does exactly the same.

Cheers

James

Check the earth straps.

Check the earth straps.

Hey m8 thanks for the reply. Where would find these? Sorry only really know the basics lol

also get the alternator charge output checked

...and the state of the battery, as this buffers the load from the power steering. If you're lucky, you may have a 'magic eye' which should be green. Otherwise, get a meter and measure the voltage across the terminals. Should be around 12V with the engine off, and 14.4 I think with it on. The earth strap is the short, thick, black wire between the battery's negative terminal and the body of the car! :)

HI.I had the same problem. Garage tried everything. Changed alternator and eveything. Ended up just bein a duff battery. My advice is to just check that first.

Kewl might borrow my m8s battery of his Ibiza see if that makes the flickering go away. Its so annoying having all the lights go dim every time i go round a corner lol

Just had a look at the battery's magic eye and its black, so does that mean the battery is knackered?

Yes(ish) maybe! Best plan now is to get yourself along to a battery place and get them to whack a load across the battery and see if it can deliver the goods - if not its new battery time. What can happen with a battery is that its own internal resistance rises and so that limits the max current that it can deliver as a lot of the PD gets dropped as heat inside the battery.
