Petrol vrs sound like a diesel.

Featured Replies

Just been a run in my petrol vrs and when i pulled on the drive and left the engine to tick

over for a minute I noticed the engine sounde like a diesel.

The noise was still there when I revved the engine.

Is it the tappets? The car is under warranty so is it worth nipping to the dealers?

The car was service only 2000 mile ago and the oil level is OK,any ideas?

Oh god no! That's horrible :(

I'd get it to the stealers, just in case mate.

Went to car after 5 hours and started it and car had quietened down a lot.

However the radiator fans kicked in straight away even though temperature gauge was on cold.Very strange...

Started car this morning and car was alot quieter(not that quiet though) but fans didn't

come on,nipping to stealers this morning, will let you know how I get on...

Is there oil in it?

Sounds like bottom end? As Babs said, is there enough oil in it or could water have got in the oil?

I've also just bought a Petrol VRS - it's sounds a bit chuggy & like a diesel at low speeds/idle, but I just presumed thats normal?

It also has the lumpy idle many people talk of...

The power is still there, runs fine and it takes it AGGEESS to warm up and the cooling fans hardly ever kick in...

Was it a properly noticable change when it started sounding like a Diesel?

mine sounds like a diesel when i start it, there a tick from the top end, i put the tick down to the high pressure fuel system probably needs to give the injectors a good kick to open them. but it just sounds like a pd, the starter is probably the same so makes a similar sound i know that sound daft. the actualy not off the engine it much smoother when its actualy ticking over than any diesel though. is this what you mean?

also did you have aircon on when the fan cut in? most aircon systems activate the fan? also make sure coolant is topped up if its low sometimes the fan cuts in.

hope this helps?

I read the title and thought - so quiet, so smooth, murmuring engine? Then I read the thread and realised you meant to say 'sounds like an old diesel'?!

The CR certainly doesn't sound like you describe!

The problem with the petrol TFSI engine is that it mimics a diesel. It has a fuel pump running at up to 130 bar and also direct injection.

They sound bad cold, ok when warm but bleedin awful when very hot. The TFSI is not a tuneful engine unfortunately.

hence why the injectors are noisy then still nowhere near hdi pressures but 130bar still needs a kick to open them. maybe that is the ticking you can hear?

On Monday I took the car to my nearest main dealer who said the car had a misfire and although it had a 1 year warranty I would be best taking the car to the dealer I had bought it from.

I then rang the said dealer and booked the car in for tuesday morning.

I drove to the dealer (over an hour away) and they checked it out and said there wasn't a problem coming up on the diagnostics machine. I insisted it was still misfiring.

I also told them that so far I had also had to replace the rear pads and all 3 wiper blades on a car that was supposedly serviced only 2000 mile ago.

I then took out their head technician for a drive and the tick over was still lumpy. He said "they all do that"

After further argument they agreed to change the plugs and plug it back into the diagnostics machine if I would pay half.

They said the only other problem could be the coil packs which are covered by the warranty but they couldn't replace unless it showed up as a fault on the diagnostics machine.

I reluctantly agreed. The bill came to £164 so I paid £82.

The tick over is still lumpy but so far the noise has stayed away.

I know warranty's don't cover everything but am I being unreasonable?

Oh! and the oil level is spot on,it never uses any...

I can pretty much gurantee this will be the high pressure fuel pump or it's own cam follower. The cam follower for the pump is case-hardened and this carbon based hardening layer wears through, allowing very quick wear to the follower and so extra clearance that causes noise and low fuel supply. If it's really bad the follower can drop into the head causing damage and the pump itself may well be worn as a result of the harsh banging it suffers with a worn follower.

Seen this MANY times!!

Also, just make sure the air box is fitted correctly as if this is on wrong it can make all sorts of funny, very harsh sounding noises as it vibrates on the cam cover and breather separator on top of the head.

You can take your car to ANY Skoda main dealer for warranty work. Take it back to the local dealer who found the misfire and let them deal with it. If its a misfire then you might have unburnt fuel going into the cat which is not good. Sounds like coilpacks on there way out.

Does it misfire all the time?

I get the cold start misfire which i am working on. cam lobe is fine and i have fitted a new coil pack which hasn't solved the problem, my idling is spot one. One thing that can cause rough idling is a blown pcv valve. Mine also sound like a quiet diesel but i am quite sure this is normal.

Mine makes a tick, tick, ticking noise on idle. Always does it, always has done it. No lumpy idle though?

Car now running fine except for slightly lumpy tickover. Sounds like I'm not the only one...

http://briskoda.net/octavia-ii/engine-lumpy-idle-tickover/150577/

Diesel type noise has not come back.

The car was three years old when I bought it and came with a 1 year warranty. I guess this is the dealers warranty and not Skoda'a.

I'm just miffed that after only 2000 mile I've had to pay for new pads, new wiper blades and new plugs, I guess Stevie wonder did the service for them.

Defo won't buy from that dealer again:(

Both the pads & wiper blades were probably quite OK when it was serviced 2000 miles ago.

You don't tend to replace things that don't need doing.

If I take a car in for a service and I'm told "Pads will only last you another 1500 miles" I'd probably say "See you in 1400 miles time then".

How many miles are on the clock?

Your vRS won't usually see new plugs until around it's 3rd service.

Mine's got 35k on the clock now and it's still on the original plugs.

My wife had a follow up courtesy call today and she said I wasn't too happy about the things I've had to replace in only a couple of months.

Any way they rang back when I came home from work and to cut a long story short I've had my money for the plugs reimbursed:thumbup:.I'm chuffed
