"Motor/pump?!" type noise starts after switching off.

Featured Replies

My car (55 plate VRS) has developed a characteristic! :(

After most trips, the car starts making a motor/pump type noise after I switch off the engine.

There's a definite pause after switch off, then this noise starts, continues for say 10 seconds, then finishes on a rising note.

Any ideas...

I had the same problem - like a droning noise. The garage diagnosed it as coming from a metal block which has a number of vacuum lines coming from it, situated at the top left of the engine bay. Had to be replaced at a cost of c.£200 (not repairable I was told).

Yup sounds like the vacuum control valve block is playing up. Check all the hoses 1st, as it may just be a perished/cracked hose.

ive got the same noise and though it was normal. i read it was the vents closing?? or am i making that up

This block thingy, is it maintainable and why does it go wrong? Can A squirt carb cleaner or similar into it to un-gum it for example? Can other bits have an effect on it. Maybe a gummed up anti-shudder valve?

Car appears to be entering the mechanical TLC part of its life. After having past through the electricals part... Coolant and fuel temp sensors ove 12 months ago....

When i changed my vaccum unit i was informed they are sealed units and cannot be tampered with. Its only £90 to buy and 30secs to fit.

Eventually the engine will keep running after you have swithed the ignition off. Its not normal and will only get worse over time.

Sounds amusing... I may let it do this if it helps to strike up conversations at parties - LOL. :)

My Fabia VRS started making a similar sounding noise a few weeks ago and when in for its 40k service last weekend I asked them to investigate.

They heard the noise but couldn't see anything wrong. But they wanted it back in for the master tech to have a look. On picking it tonight I was told there was nothing wrong, even when I said well it didn't used to do it.

The service person said they plugged it into the diagnostic system and there was no problem found.

How would / could a vaccum block thingy be diagnosed by the diagnostic system ?

I've not noticed any problems with the car, What damage could this issue cause ?

How would / should a mechanic fault find this issue ?

I was told by my Local garage @ service that this was a normal trait and using diagnostics the car showed no fault. It took Ali @ Unit 18 2 mins and he found the fault using the diagnostics.

I was advised to changed the box as it controls the engines overrun. Changed the box. £90 from the dealer and Ali fitted it for buttons as it took seconds....

Might this be related to crud buildup in the REGR/flapper valve?

In which case, a quick check of the pipes and cleaning of the EGR body might resolve matters....

Depends if its the ASZ or BLT engine. The later has a motor controlled ASV which is separate from the EGR.

It's an ASZ.

It's an ASZ.

As the noise had been getting worse, I booked it back in last week and my local Skoda dealer replaced the vaccum control block thingy under warranty. So alls well now.

Hi all.

I have an ASZ engined Fabia vRS that has started to suffer with rough starting. I've had a play with this little black box thing and I've noticed that if you unclip the strip with all the pipes attached to it after a good start it sounds like it sucks air in, if I take it off after a crap start, it doesn't! :wonder:

Have I got a duff module or a split pipe somewhere?

Ta,

Chris.

Does sound like you have a vacuum leak between the tandem pump, vacuum reservoir and vacuum valve block. Check the brake servo vacuum hose for splits at each end, common fault and was a recal as well.

Ta Moggy, I'll take a look this weekend.

Did I hear somewhere that Samco make a set of pipes to replace all the vacuum module ones or was it just fantasy? :p

I've just had the same problem - the dealers were unable to diagnose electronically, although they did hear it after they drove the car. I've ordered a new block from TPS - it's a bit more than £90 + VAT though....appears to be £150 VAT inc ! Will fit tomorrow and see if it fixes the problem. Mine is BLT engine with 87k on the clock.....

Just got the same problem, 4 sec after switching off a low groan/distant fog horn sound for 5sec.

The mechanic said it was £200 to fix if I was worried but not dangerous.

Occasionally after a run it ticks over at 1150 rpm until the throttle is blipped and it returns to 900, are they related?

Tickover problems on late Fabias is commonly down to the throttle pedal. Change was made around the time the BLT was introduced, so very late 2005/early 2006. Unlikely to be related to the vacuum block droning on issue.
