Whats that loud beep

Featured Replies

We have 55 plate Elegance 2.0 140bhp dsg Octy. In the last couple of day's a loud beep has gone off when starting, its from the dash area, any ide's guys?.

Low fuel warning? That and the seatbelt chime are the only noises my car makes on starting...

how cold is it in the mornings where you stay, the ice warning bong comes on at 4degrees

Service, low temp, seatbelt, oil, washer fluid....

you will get a very loud and alarming BEEEEEEP - BEEEEEEP - BEEEEEEP if its something serious like low coolant or low oil presssure and possibly brake problems.

Other than that its most likely a minor thing as mentioned above but that would be more like a gentle 'bong' sort of noise sometimes with an amber warning light on the dash which you should check out via the user manual just to be sure.

Does any warning lights stay on after engine running and driving etc ?

If it's asking for a service, there will be a spanner symbol showing by the milometer. But it's easy to miss, and doesn't appear very often! (My 06 Octavia TDI has done 32,000 miles and still hasn't asked for its second service...

I bet it's your reversing sensor making the bleep it makes when you put the car into reverse!

I always reverse into my parking spot at home, and usually leave the car in gear. So next time I start it up, it makes one loud BLEEP but as I'm (hopefully) no-where near the wall, I don't get the regular bleeping.

Did it for me.

Thanks guys for answers, the weather here is warm and no other warning lights come on, or service spanner. As for the reversing sensors, that noise is differant entirely to the one we have. I will do a check on what has been said and let you know.

The only other thing I can think of is that there's a glitch in the radio. There was talk a while ago about the stream radios making bang noises for no good reason, but maybe you've found a rarer fault.

Well guys i went through what you suggested and on the service display which i had to put up it said 432 miles to go!!. Now i have only done 4000 miles this year so whats that all about, and strange the beep did not go off last time using it.

Fixed regime?

I think it averages mileage per day to work out the remaining mileage.

fixed servicing = 10K miles or 12 months, whichever comes first.

variable maximum = approx 19K miles or 2 year whhichever comes first.

Fixed regime?

No variable, October 2008 last service.

I am on variable since new and last service was October 2008.

Either it's been changed to fixed at last service, or the oil quality is dropping so the car has guessed how many miles you'll get.

How many days show remaining? on either regime you'll see both miles and days.

Hey Pastiche,

don't know if I've experienced a similar loud beep beep beep from my car but I suspect I have. For me it has happened a few times - and I can easily make it happen again. It's happened when I've stalled the car while moving and had to restart while still rolling (not something I'd readily admit to, but I think one feature of the DMF is that if you catch the engine at the wrong point it can stop dead because lots of the engine angular momentum is in the moving weights). When this has happened it has scared the living daylights because I've been trying to pull away smartly, eg at a roundabout, and no power, no power steering etc!

On the rolling restart, the three loud beeps shout at me from the dash.

Now to repeating it in controlled conditions - driving slowly at c15mph on an empty straight road I de-clutched and turned off the ignition. Switch back on and BEEP BEEP BEEP. One light showed for longer than the others, and longer than normally - the airbag warning light, so that might be a clue.

In my case it's definitely not one of the gentler bongs associated with servicing, parking sensors, seatbelt warning etc, so I figure its more serious. However, since the light then goes out and normal service is resumed, I assume all is ok, unless someone can tell me otherwise.

In your case, if this is the beep, its probably more serious and I would get it checked out!
