Drove my 1.3 Felicia to Bath yesterday

Featured Replies

Couldn't help but think it needs a 6th gear! :worried:

Got up to 70 but the engine sounded like it was going to take off. Revs didn't seem overly high, maybe it's just something I have to get used to, hehe. My previous car was a 1.0 Suzuki Swift and that didn't seem to make half as much fuss, even the few times I took it over 90. Odd. Anyone know if I can swap the gearbox out for something with an extra cog? lol.

swapping out the gearbox wont help much. however it is possible to use a fifth gear from a diesel box in place of your existing 5th gear

Lol The felly is a little lacking in sound proofing department.

That won't make any odds - the ratios are all the same, it's only the final drive that's different.

If the OP wants a box with taller overall gearing, he'd better look for a diesel box..... like wot i have got.

Or there's always the 6-speed box from the rally cars, but I don't think that would be an ideal solution given the lifespan of them!

I think your both missing the point though, the revs wern't high, it's just that the felly is a damn noisy car.

I hate to say that he's right. Although having said that mine isn't too bad. But then again I rarely do 70mph in it!

:P Felicias are the height of luxury compared to my old Rapid 120 with 4 speed box!

What kind of noise?? My son's 1.3 is a little rattly at low revs, but quiet enough at speed. I have done 75 mph in her with less noise than my big Toyota. Perhaps the timing chain is loose or the engine is in need of some tlc.

A rattle at low speed/idle is more than likely the timing chain rattling about no real issue there.

She's certainly quieter on a run than my last two cars- Polo 1.0 and ZX 1.9D.

There is actually a fair amount of sound proofing in the Felicia by the looks. An under bonnet shield and padding all on both sides of the bulk head.

Phil

Yeah the 1.3 isnt what you would call refined but mine doesnt sound that loud/stressed at 70 or maybe my speakers drown some of it out.

bet mine is noisier:P

 really ? Driving SWMBO's N reg 1.4 Polo is like sitting a library compared to my "newer" s1htbox

Ah... yes but mine was an 'L' reg Polo "Fox Coupe"! :P

And tom... yes I'm sure it is a lot noiser

Heh! Yeah the car isn't overly noisy, it's more the pitch the engine gets to that was annoying. I'm sure it'll be fine when I've had time to install my stereo. Gets to 4k revs in 5th and you kinda instinctively want to change up a gear again, but obviously it's not there. It just sounds, um, uncomfortable, I guess, for want of a better word. I think the engine and all is fine, I don't think there's anything wrong with it at all, I think it's just moving to another make / model of car when you're used to something else and you have to get used to it.

Good to know I have options though for later on if I really can't stand it anymore. The speedo goes to 120, I know it'll never actually do that speed, but I'm wondering how nasty it'll sound just pushing 100, lol.

It doesn't actually sound too bad at 90-100mph. I have done it before on the Autobahn for a short time. I wouldn't want to do it for too long but it was bearable with some music on in the background.

Wait til you drive a Favorit!!!

I havent got a rev counter :P

I have but it doesn't work :o

I think the 5th gear is tuned for best fuel efficiency at about the 56mph mark?! A 6th would be nice but guess the choice is between driving slower for efficiency while being overtaken by lorries, or driving to keep up with everyone else with a bit more noise and using petrol slightly faster.

Aye, I pretty much drove 70mph ( I may have passed that a few times due to not noticing on the motorway) and was shocked at the amazing fuel economy. Really impressed! The more I drive my Flic the more I am convinced it was good karma finally coming round when I was looking at cars to buy!

whats the amazing fuel economy you have experienced.

I think mines hovering at the 38 prob cause it is service time in about 3k

Yeah I need to work out my fuel economy properly but I think I'm going to be pleasently surprised. I've been driving into town and doing other small journeys on the same tank of petrol since I got back and it's only gone down to 1/4 full. Very impressed.

Felicia's aint too noisy if they're properly serviced, even at motorway speeds.

Re fuel consumption, sensible driving sees high 30's and "B road" driving can see about 28-30...

phil.. next time you are down south you will have to pop round, and i will get it working for you;)

Haha! Don't worry I have tried many a time to thrash it but to no avail... it still won't go any higher than 4500 rpm then drop down to zero. Bloody czech electrics! :P
