gearboxes which ones can we use?

Featured Replies

Just a general question, but which gearboxes are recommended upgrades for the 4x4? Are all gearboxes similar? I.E. is the only difference between a 2wd and 4x4 the transfer box? If so can you swap a 4x4 transfer box onto a TDi box (assuming the TDi box is a bit stronger and higher geared). :confused:

reason for asking is I may be able to get a good deal on a 6 speed tdi box and if it can fit I might be able to put it away for rainy day :rolleyes:

diesel boxes are pants for performance ask andrew :D

wouldnt touch it go for the petrol 6 speed likee des runs :thumbup:

as said mate, get the 6 speed petrol one 02m iir not too sure tho?

unless you going for 300+bhp mate the diesel box will be too high geard, hasnt StevieWonder got the diesel box?

Disagree completely!

With big power and the petrol 02M box you'd be changing gears every few seconds. Des has a better compromise as his engine has been stroked to a 2 litre and that will affect how the engine revs.

My box is around 14/15mph more in each gear over the standard vRS 5 speed 02J gearbox, plus I have the advantage of having a really good high speed cruising gear - where laws allow of course.

Put it this way, imagine a vRS Fabia that can rev to 8k, that’s what it’s like.

going on what i have seen with andyrews car when he was running 300+ with the diesel box it wasnt that good :o

but with the 6 speed diesel you will never top out the 6th gear as its fit for 200mph or am i completley wrong and should stop talking now lol

steve please put me right as im now rambling:D

Where can I get one!? :rofl: I need a 200mph Skoda!!!

I've been to 180mph (not GPS confirmed), in a tuned 911(993). That was pretty intense! But my dad holds the family record at 200mph testing a Panther Six in the 70's!

Anyway..... yeah gearboxes. So on a 4x4 is it just the diff housings that are slightly different (or are they just identical?) and have a bevel box bolted onto the side of them, and the gearboxes are interchangeable?

glad I got that right lol, Id love a fabia that could rev to 8000RPM lol wouldnt wanna stop or turn it tho.

The thing it tho that the 5 speed and 6 speed are the same top end so whats the point? unless you gonna put lots of power thru it then might as well stay on the 5 speed as the 6 speed needs lots of toys too dunt it?

So an S3/TT Quattro box is the strongest with the 4x4 option? what box does the 225 cupra use?

same one as far as Im aware mate, all the petrol 6 speed boxes are the same top end as the vRS 5 just the are a bit stronger

6th is set for 200mph, but gears 1-5 are so similar to the standard 5 speed box you'd never know it was anything other than standard until you went to select 6th gear!

Steve:)

mmm so ste, If I put a diesel 6 speed in my car and got the k04 done so I get 260bhp ish and only used 1-5 it would be pritty much the same as what I have now? and only use 6th on the M ways for cruisin?

Billy,

In gear speeds @7400rpm are roughly:

1st = 55mph

2nd = 85mph

3rd = 125mph

4th = 155mph

5th = 180mph

6th = 215mph

You might struggle; it would depend on the torque you could get from the KO4 setup. My IHI worked nicely, but 6th was no use unless on the motorway or a private strip of road;)

6th is more like an old fashioned overdrive, the reality is I can cruise along at 150mph @ around 5k on a mountain of torque, or wring it out to the limiter and get wheel spin at 70+ mph – that’s with the limited slip diff!

I personally like the longer ratios and the need not to be constantly changing gear. Having driven plenty of 'hot' S3 and LCR's I really appreciate mine. I have the best of both worlds IMHO. It is an acquired driving style; you can’t just jump in and drive ‘quickly’ like you could perhaps with the lower ratio box.

Just my pennies worth.

Did anyone know if the 4x4 and fwd boxes are the same with just the transfer box being a bolt on? I just re-read the thread and am still not sure :confused:

No.

4x4 box has much shorter ratios compared to the 2wd box.

OK short ratios aside. is it possible to take a TDi or other 6 speed box that is fwd and add on the transfer box for a 4x4 application? I like the idea of a cruising top gear for economy

the actual differential is different to get the drive to the transfer box, it has a large diameter splined hollow shaft as part of the differential carrier. I don't know whether the 5 speed transfer box is the same a one for a 6 speed.Have heard of the VRS ratios being put in 4x4 boxes to get std VRS gearing. Better crusing revs would be nice but I love to be able to leave people behind in the outside lane at will !

I've got a vRS gearbox sat in the garage to do just that. But been thinking it would be cheaper just to put the 4x4 differential on the vRS 'box, if that is possible?

The calculations in this thread assume wrongly that the peak power is at 7000rpm - it is actually at around 5800rpm for unmodified and most electronically modified engines.

It appears that diesel gearbox makes perfect sense if your engine is chipped and you want fuel economy on the motorway...
