Front towing eye

Featured Replies

My previous cars had fixed towing eyes, so I thought I'd check out fitting the screw-in type on a good day in daylight rather than on a windswept hill with no streetlights after midnight.

I didn't bother much with the rear point, as the bumper cover seemed to be easy to remove. The front was another matter. After a brief tugging of the relevant bit, nothing seemed to be happening. I retired to check the manual again. Observing the illustration and instructions more closely this time, I tried again. Still no luck. I mentally put it on the list of things to take up with the dealer.

I decided to have one more go, using a bit more force. The cover came off this time but the combination of the low position and force needed caused me to roll over backwards. Rather than trying to break my roll with my hands, I decided to go with it, which was OK apart from banging the side of my knee.

After dusting myself off I screwed in the eye, anticlockwise thread I'd noted (probably wouldn't have guessed on the dark hill though). I put the cover back, then tried to remove it again. I didn't roll over this time but still couldn't find a way to remove it without a chance of falling backward.

Anyone else had trouble with this front cover, or found a way of removing it without falling over?

Good Man, nothing like enjoying the ride :)

Never had that problem with mine to be honest

If it needs towing away, then that's the job if the RAC/AA man - if he breaks anything in the process it's his probem to fix too

I was thinking more of if/when you need to tow someone else.

Then surely that would be the rear towing eye you would need to use? :D

I got stuck in a muddy field and had to be pulled out backwards as the front cover wouldn't come off. I'd already tried and the guy with the rope came up and said "Don't worry, I've got one of these" before also failing bismally to remove it.

Sometimes with front wheel drive it's easier to pull someone using the front tow point, if it's from a ditch or equivalent. Also, if it's at night, you've got your headlights on the action.
