Vibration in higher gears at low revs (vRS)

Featured Replies

Hope this is not a fault...

When slowing down from speed in 6th, 5th and to some extent 4th gear (revs dropped to around 1500) I get a vibration through the car. In lower gears the car will pull from idle without protest. The vibration is with no throttla applied and seems worse the higher the gear.

Any ideas?

Early signs of DMF failure. Listen for any rattles/vibration when switching the ignition off.

If I drive the car very gently at all times will that extend the life of the DMF?

Very hard to say it depends what's going on inside the DMF. If the vibration gets worse, I would have it looked at ASAP, as there is the risk of damaging the gearbox input shaft bearings, and or crankshaft main end shells.

One thing you can try, is feel the amount of vibration on the gearstick compared to the vibration felt through the steering wheel. If more from the gearstick, that points to the DMF, if more through the steering wheel, suspension or driveshaft etc.

I wouldn't rule out engine and gearbox mountings either. Although vibration is worse in higher gears, vibrations can be torque specific, so only occur under certain loads.

Could end up being a cheap and simple fix.

I rang my dealer and he said bring it in for checks. I asked how much for a new flywheel and it will be £2850 plus VAT. I had better start saving fast before I take the car anywhere near them!

jesus christ, thats a crazy price for a DMF!

if they try and charge you that, take it elsewhere... thats mental

Their having a laugh mate. Full Clutch and DMF kit is now £400+fitting, 4 hours max. Go to an Indy and it will cost about £600 all in. The price quoted would get you a new gearbox/clutch/DMF and enough change for a good night out.
