Camera help please

OK, Im after a new compact camera, digital. I have an old Sony DSC 80 and a Canon S3 IS. Both take a good pic but the Sony is showing signs of age now with software issues and the Canon drives me insane with its lousy LCD screen and bulk.

Been to look at a few and have narrowed it down to either a Canon SX200 IS or a Panasonic TZ7... both have great points and little flaws but I just cant choose between them!

I also looked a bit upmarket at the Canon G10 and Nikon P6000, the G10 is just too big though.

Dont want a DSLR as I did have a D40 for over a year but gave it to the wife as hers is dying... not keen on the bulk.

Help.... the P6000 is on offer for £280 locally and the othe two around £240 to £260... what do I do:eek:

This is such a personal thing !

But, I had a chance to play around with a few of Canons new models on a recent USA trip.

G11, like you say, is quite bulky (G10 is now old model) but has every feature your DSLR has (except interchangeable lenses), great if you want total control (did you use manual settings on the D40?) But lacks the overall "put it in ya pocket" portability

S90IS really great camera, has the usual auto picture modes, optical Image stabilisation, but has manual/RAW capabilities

The SX120 IS is lower in price but retains many of the features of the others IS, but lacks some of the manual control.

Have alook at these sites for price comparison/opinions.

I'll say this really quietly so as not to upset anyone.

Have you considered the Panasonic FZ28 (if it's still available), or it's successor the FZ38.

Read some reviews to see what comments have been made by users.

Why so Quiet ?

People have been raving about the F series for quite a while now, the differences between good & average cameras have been getting smaller with every update.

Personal choice is such a strong consideration, I kinda grew up with Canon, I know the menu layout, so I guess I find them easier to use, others will have a Nikon bias etc.

decide on a rough spec criteria for choice, pester a dealer & try out a few models & go with whatever feels good in your hands...........

Cheers, like you say it is a personal thing. Im leaning towards the TZ7 after reading loads of reviews... but I might just wait a bit as Ive heard Nikon are dropping the P6000 so prices ar bound to fall and maybe if they introduce a replacement it will be fab!

Its such a shame the Canon G range is so big, they are awesome cameras. Id personally go for the G10 over the G11 as I think the 10 is a bit better tbh.

I have not really spent very much time on a G10, but from the reviews I have seen, The G11 corrects many of the flaws in the G10, it has a sensible Pixel count that is manageable & of a good size for quality vs size, Canon finally realised that MegaPixels are not everything.

Have a look on DPReview, sometimes biased but there are many view so you can balance it (kinda like here really)

Purchase what suits your needs & preferences then take it out in public for the obligatory:

"Wow, that looks a really good camera, it must take really good pictures"
