My Sonus sheepskin wash mitt decided to suddenly fall apart on me over the weekend, while washing the car. Looked pretty disgusting with lumps of hairy skin just falling off and getting left on the car! I've only had the thing about 9 months, so I was wondering if this was normal sheepskin behaviour? Or is it my fault for machine washing it with the rest of my cleaning kit?

I also applied a layer of Collnite 476S, with a foam applicator. Can I wash and reuse the applicator, or is it a one use job?

I think I also have a tar problem that needs sorting out. I have loads of tiny little spots of something that looks like tar on the roof of my car, and they are staining the paint a rusty colour around them. CarLack removed some of the smaller spots, but am I right in assuming that I should try clay next?

I followed the following process on the body: rinse, 2BM wash (Megs Gold Class with sheepskin mitt), rinse, dry (Megs QD with Megs waffle towel), CarLack polish (damp microfibre pad, and towel), Collnite wax (foam pad, and MF towel). Seemed to work very well, but I think I need to add a process to get the stubborn tar spots off. I'll get some pictures up of the shinyness!

I too had a sheepskin mitt fall apart after I machine washed it so I only rinse it now in cold water.

As for the FA's I normally just stick them into the same wash as my towels.but I do also give them a rinse before hand.

Clay does remove some spots but you may be best with bug and tar remover then claying it.

Also if you have any scratches or swirl marks I'd strongly recommend Meg's UC - I've tried T-Cut, swirl X and scratch X but UC seems to do the best job :)

I do have some Autoglym Tar Remover, but I'm always reluctant to use it because it smells so potent! I use it on the larger more obvious lumps of tar at the moment. It says on the bottle to just apply it and leave it to dissolve the tar, but I'm worried about it dissolving the clearcoat too! It's great for getting tar off carpets though!

may be best getting something that is for bugs and tar as their normally not that strong I know Meg's Turtle wax and other makes do this type of product.

Lambswool mitts should be washed/rinsed by hand which will give them a long life span.

As per the previous reply the applicator just needs to be put in the machine with your cloths/microfibres..a squirt of Fairy on a 476S pad never fails to loosen the wax built up in the pores of the pad.

Are the tar spots only on the roof?...depending on where you work / park your car it could also be some sort of industrial fallout???...I'd try some tar & glue remover first before resorting to clay.

Process looks good, removing the tar spots and any other contaminants is essentially good prep & doesn't need to happen every time. The same goes for the polishing stage, once you've polished & waxed the first time, you can then just top up the wax layer as / when you want.

My theory of washmitt life expectancy is linked to water hardness. Here, the North West with medium hardness water, I've been machine washing lambswool washmitts without any problem, since I started using one in 2003. It was a Meguiars one and has only been taken out of service earlier this year! A simple 40deg wash, short cycle, with some non-bio powder, with any MF cloths/drying towels I'd used during that session.

Cheers for all the advice guys, next time I get the opportunity to spend a whole day washing her (probably not till Christmas now!) I'll have a proper bash at removing all the contaminants with a combination of tar remover and maybe try clay.
