Wobbly head light

Featured Replies

My ns headlight bounces around quite a bit, it's been doing it for ages but its that time of year where I notice it now, I've had it out but can't seem to track the wooble down, any ideas anyone

TIA :D

It's probably the height adjustment motor. Check it by aiming at a wall, marking the aim position, cyling the motor to the far end of the travel, and seeing if both lights change aim the same amount.

Cheers Ken

They are both fine tbh, I replaced them some time back as one was borked, and I assumed that this one was as well but it still wobbles they both move as they should up and down. I must **** people off when following them as I can see the movement against roadsigns.

There is a headlight adjuster in there with a plastic bolt in it IIRC.

It is possible that the motor has got lazy or the plastic screw has got worn which would cause the wobble.

Is it the light casing itself that is wobbling or just the light source.

Another option I've seen a few times is a loose spring or a bulb in upside down (although not usually H4)

Mine wobbled like mad after I changed the adjuster motor. Realising what was wrong I opened the headlight up again and tightened the screw which holds the adjuster arm to the rear reflector piece. I hadn't pulled the arm all the way down to the back of the reflector with the screw because I was so paranoid about overtightening it! So it just allowed the reflector bit to rattle a bit.

I had to drive from Calais to the Austrian/Italian border, all through the night with it shaking!! Drove me mental! So I feel your pain buddy!

I think its what Bodge says tbh, it does seem too be in the light unit rather than the whole light assembly, I'll try a whip it out (the light that is !!!) tonight and see where I balls it up.

Cheers fellas.

To see where the rattle was coming from, I sat the open headlamp unit on the kitchen counter and poked the back of the reflector bit to see were the play was. This might help your diagnosis, but my money's on it being the loose screw.

For a minute there I thought you were going to offer to take some pictures of you wipping it out! Ooo errr

Well .....................

It must be too do with my crap rad mounts as I've tightened everything I can and its still doing it.:mad:

Top tip .....................Don't try this when it's dark and you're half pi55ed, it's not easy:O

I've seen them before where the relector becomes detached inside the headlamp. Hopefully it'll just need clipping back in.

As in along the bottom edge nearest the front of the light ????

As this seems too be where the movement is.

That was it. It was some years ago but I recall that the reflector just clipped back in without the need for any parts, and that it was one of those fiddly jobs.

So if I whip it out again (the light that is):rofl: and give it a good shove it should make a satisfying click ???

I hope you're not whipping it out in public when half ****ed ;)

You could whip it out and have a play with it, you may need to put it on a large flat surface such as the kitchen table, but don't let your Mrs catch you. And remember if it's still defective, you could get pulled by the fuzz.
