08 Scout Towbar!

Featured Replies

Hello everyone, first post on here so be gentle with me!

Being doing some searching on tinternet about fixed flanged towbars for my neighbours newly purchased 08 Scout.

He needs a towbar with twin electrics fitting which he's asked me to do ( I'm a Nissan grease monkey, I mean Technician by trade)

Now a few questions keep popping up which I hope you in the know maybe able to help me with so he goes:-

a) he wants/needs a fixed flanged type as he's got an alco type hitch on his caravan and he thinks a detachable will be too tricky at his mature age, will this be picked up by his rear park sensors even without the caravan attached? (having a bumper protector plate fitted as well I'm sure won't help!)

B) the electrics I presume are multiplex, is there a recommended kit to use for lights and 12s socket? Are there any aftermarket ones that disconnect rear sensors when connected?

Sorry for all the questions on my first post but my google searching is getting me no where fast!

Thanks in advance

Regards,

Matt

;) Hi Matt, welcome to briskoda, I have a 09 FL version of the Scout and it came with the factory fitted towbar ( westfilla I think ) which is removable, my caravan has the alco stabilizer hitch and it works fine with the towball (it has to be a longer neck to allow for the hitch),but you have to get on your knees to be able to insert it into a slot just under the bumper, or you could leave it on the car as it locks on. The electrics are tricky as mine is fitted with the 13 pin system (Skodas) which runs off the CAN bus so when I go into reverse the car knows I have a trailer connected (displays this on the balero radio) and disconnects the reversing sensors, I think Towsure do a bracket and electrics (CAN bus I think) for the Scout and then you would have to use Vag Com to enable the car seeing the trailer, you could use a fixed towbar but like you say the reversing sensors would pick it up.cheers - Stuart.

Welcome to Briskoda Matt. You've made an excellent choice of car! It is also an excellent towcar. I got a fixed towbar fitted because Skoda UK did not have the correct detachable towbar available when my car was delivered (March 08). The fixed towbar is excellent and the dealer made a good job of fitting twin electrics.

As for the rear sensors - there is no problem with the towbar setting these off. The only issue for you might be cost. An independent towbar specialist will fit a towbar cheaper I'm sure compared to a Skoda delealship. I got the dealer to fit the towbar/electrics from new to get the full warranty cover for three years.

Good luck!
