Caliper bolts?

Featured Replies

Hi

Does anyone know where I can get a set of rear caliper bolts for my 06 octavia tdi. My local skoda dealership in Northampton has closed and my nearest one is Bedford. Are the bolts available anywhere else or only main dealer.

Thanks

Just a quick update.

I travelled to skoda in Bedford today and ordered in a set of rear caliper bolts as they had none in stock. I noticed that the dealership was deserted with hardly any stock. When I spoke to the parts guy about Northampton closing and the reason why they were low on stock his reply was he doesn't know whats going on but it doesn't look good.

If this is Autohaus in Northampton (bought mine there) I think they have gone bust?

The website Autohaus Group leads to a "page not found" message on the main Skoda.co.uk website. Same for mazda too.

why do you need them??? whats wrong with the ones you have got??/

I'm changing the rear pads so I thought it was advisable to renew the bolts at the same time.

If the brakes are like the Fuby ones, the only reason you should replace the bolts is they have some locking compound on them. The easiest thing to do is give the old ones a wire brushing and put a drop of Thread lock (Loctite) on them.

If you have not bought the pads, then I believe some actually come with these bolts in the box. It depends on the manufacturer.

Thanks Jim

I didn't know that, I've now bought the bolts so I'll replace them anyway but useful to know for the future, thanks.

It's the same with the front pads, when you replace them. You don't need to change the 'caliper guide pin bolts' by Skoda or Haynes.

Most authoritative sources (ETKA, Haynes, Etzold - a German DIY manual) agree that ALL (front & rear) caliper bolts should be renewed. As to the brake holder bolts, the rear ones (M14 heads) should be renewed, the front ones vary - some say yes, others don't mention it.

And I don't think the reason is the Locktite on threads - those bolts are stretched irreversibly during first installation.

The manuals are obliged to provide industry best practice advice.

The only stretch bolt is the rear brake carrier to hub bolt which is 90Nm + 90 degrees.  Personally, I wouldn't flinch at using it a 2nd time depending how it feels when it comes out.  If I needed to replace it I'd consider a standard grade 8 bolt torqued to ~150Nm.

The rear caliper to guide pin bolt is a normal bolt (it's probably HT by the look of it).  VW says to replace it but as a previous poster said, wire brush, loktite & 35nm will generally be OK.

The front guide pins and front carrier to hub bolts aren't stretch bolts and don't have to be replaced unless they are fubar. Torque is 30Nm & 190Nm respectively.  I think you'll need a good breakfast for the 190nm.
