Fitting plate surrounds ?

Featured Replies

ive got some Mlada Boleslav plate surrounds that i need to fit, but im unsure how to go about it, id presume the front will be easy as i can just screw into plastic, but what about the tailgate ?

anyone got any pics of the tailgate with no number plate on it ?

the holders have little circles at the end which look ideal for screws, however they are raised up so would stop the number plate being fitted once you have the size of the head of the screw on it, as per pics below

I advise extreme caution when initially taking a screwdriver to the rear! I popped the head clean off one of the screws because it had gone rotten and my plates sticky padded on now until I get around to tapping out the thread.

Similar story on the front. Head so rotten nothing to slot a driver into now.. Need to spend a Sunday replacing them all!

my plates at the moment are both stuck on with sticky pads

An old joiner's trick for dealing with rotten heads on screws is to slightly tighten them first to "break" to seal where they have stuck over time, and then undo them. That way you don't need to apply as much force when undoing them and they are less likely to completely chew up.

anyone any ideas ?

A pair of the slots in the surround should line up with the existing screw holes in the tailgate.

Screw the surround to the tailgate first - you might need a couple of washers too if the slots are big ones.

Then slot the plate ino the surround.

The idea is that you can use a surround without having to drill though the plate iself.

yea no way am i drilling my new plates, washers is what ill need !.........the slots in the surround are really big

so, the tailgate already has holes, thanks :) has anyone got a pic of this ?

can you get to these holes from inside the tailgate behind the trim panel ?........cos if so ill get those plastic nuts and bolts you can buy and thread lock them

i think im gonna find it hard to get these pressed dubmeister plates into the skoda surrounds :( though i think with a very slight mod to the surrounds, they will fit

I can take a couple of pics of mine tomorrow.

Feel free to PM me with a gentle reminder if I forget!

thanks, im not convinced these pressed plates are gonna fit into the Mlada Boleslav surrounds properly

I've recently fitted Dubmeister plates to the same surrounds and found the plates are slightly too big. The plate is supposed to sit on 4 tabs but I broke these off and the plate fits fine. HTH

do you mean the small tabs behind the lower outer tabs ?

any pics of yours fitted ?

OK - some pics as promised. By the sound of it my surround is not the same type as yours - mine has the hinged clamp along the bottom edge.

However, as least you can see the way the surround fixes to the tailgate.

Working backwards...

thanks for those, really appreciated, sadly my surrounds are different and dont hinge down at the bottom, i think some 'fettlin' will be required

I feel the rear needs holes at the side. I will be using some self tapping screws and sealer so I can have 1 in each corner otherwise the surround moves. I even used some sheets of metal to try and distribute the screws in the middle of the surround

do you mean the small tabs behind the lower outer tabs ?

any pics of yours fitted ?

Here are the tabs I broke off. I broke 4 of them off from the back of the surround which allowed the plate to sit lower down and clip into place. Once fitted you can't see they have been broken off.
