Telecoms and TV packages

Featured Replies

We're moving house.

I'm wondering if this is the time to ditch BT and try to consolidate and get something cheaper.

I was thinking about the combined Sky packages with the TV, broadband and phone. I can get all three for about £30 a month.

At the moment the bb on it's is about 18 and the phone is about 20.

But I have heard that Sky can be a bit poop should things not go smoothly. There is no cable in the area to look at that option and I doubt the connection speed is up to getting BT Vision as it's pretty rural.

Any opinions or suggestions?

As long as the local exchange has been LLU'ed. Ours hasn't so BT ended up being a reasonable price compared to Sky etc.

Doesn't the Sky package need a BT line?

I'm really happy with my Virgin package, I am paying under £40 per month for L Broadband, XL TV (everything but movies / sports), XL Phone (line rental + free calls to land lines 24/7)

I do get a hefty loyalty bonus though, the V+ Set to box is pretty swish and there is plenty of HD content on Virgin now as well as some great catch up stuff.

Have done this very recently and have no regrets. The biggest problem was BT dragging their heels over the conversion of the phone line from BT to SkyTalk which meant my broadband MAC expired and the broadband order got delayed. Saying that though, the Sky Customer Services team seemed very good when I dealt with them and seemed to have all the information to hand. Oh, and they're in the UK too ;)

It needs a BT line, but it's transferred so you pay line rental and call costs to Sky. Line rental is a few quid cheaper a month...

Sky (and a lot of other people) do two packages, one for if your exchanged has been unbundled and sky have their own equipment in the exchange which is cheaper and the other just using the BT line if not which is more expensive because Sky are paying money to BT.

If you live in an area with a small exchange then there isn't the incentive for people like Sky to spend money putting in their own equipment and your stuck with BT or the more expensive version of Sky etc.

Also there isn't cable round my way either so Virgin is not an option.

Looks like the exchange hasn't been unbundled. Sky is only offering their option over a BT line.

I wasn't so bothered about the TV it was the package as a whole. There isa dish fitted so I'm going to look into Freesat and I guess the phone will stay with BT and I'll have to look around for bb.

I'm with Metronet right now which isn't the cheapest but it hadn't been worth the hassle of changing.

I tried the old change provider when moving and reactivating the line.

TBH it's a PITA, and in the end you'll get fed up and go to BT anyway unless you fancy paying some hefty costs to activate the line. Sky can do a move if existing customer and do it all for you FoC, but it ties you into a new contract.
