How much is 1gb

Featured Replies

Ok being abit of a thicky when it comes to computors etc.

I have now just got a new mobile phone with internet on it, and as part of my contract i get 1gb down load a month.

What i want to know is how long will it last, i will only use it for surfing, i know that everytime you down load a page it uses up part of the 1gb.

So to the qustions,

1) how much does downloading a page use, ie how many pages in a 1gb?

2) If i watch say bbc i player how much would a 1/2hr program use.?

3) I have used so far 32.1MB, how many MB are in a GB?

Thanks for your help.

1) Depends on what sort of pages and how much is cached. Let's say VERY roughly 1000 - 2000.

2) I'd guess somewhere in the region of 100 - 110MB if it's the same as the iPhone.

3) There are 1024MB in 1GB.

Thanks for that,

So basically don't watch tv via i player!!

I don't think iplayer on the phone will take up that much memory, would it not be in mpeg4/3gp? surely 30 mins would be less than 20mb?

iplayer streams to the iphone at 516Kb/s H.264. Therefore a "half hour" programme would actually be around 110MB. I dunno if it's different for other devices though.

On my phone it won't let you use I player unless your connected via wireless.

Nokia N97 btw.

Yeah, was just about to say, you'd be fine watching it if you connected to a wireless access point rather than using 3G.

1) Very much depends on the page.

Briskoda is a perfect example where because there isn't a mobile version (that I know of) the pictures etc come down raw, so if somebody attaches a load of 4MB pictures the page will load, then all the pictures and you could end up a 1GB for only 20pages.

2) IIRC the iPlayer data rate for streaming is 512kbits per second, so 30 minutes would take up a shade under 120MBytes.

3) while technically true, if you're working on hard discs nearly all the drive manufacturers quote capacity in SI units. This means 1GB = 1000MB and 1TB =1000GB.

It doesn't make a huge difference, but if you're working out how many movies you can get on a a disk it will make a difference of a couple of films.

I had a blackberry before i finally got a pc in my house and I was a heavy data user approx 300 to 350mb a month. You would have to be going fairly mad to go over that.
