G1/Android Users- New update

Featured Replies

I'm not even sure if the update is out yet or if was planned to be released today but I has it! It is nicknamed "Donut" and will be version 1.6 of the android software I believe.

I'm running a modified firmware though so anyone that isn't rooted etc will have to wait ;)

All I can say is wow! This phone just keeps getting better.

The phone is so fast to use now and I'm no longer experiencing "hangs" and "lags" as I was before.

They have improved the camera hugely. It loads in seconds and takes pictures very quickly now! yay!

The new keyboard options are great. There is now an integrated Phone Style T9 keyboard which is very easy and fast to use and there a quick little "calibration" you can do for the Qwerty keyboard which has solved my issues with using it and trying the hit the keys on the edges of the keyboard. It is now a serious alternative to sliding out the keyboard.

Also the market has been improved/updated. It is now all white and grey colour themed with new categories for the apps and better sorting of apps than the old one.

Few other bits and pieces here and there like the "Clear Notifications" button in the drop down notifications window now just reads "Clear" and not sure if you could do it before but you can now bring up the apps menu by just touching the box at the bottom of the home screen.

There is also built in Text to speach (requires to go to market and download some data files first) but not played with this yet.

Phil

Nice one Phil. Did it come down to your phone directly on an update, or did you have to go looking for it? I had some app updates appear this morning, but no other updates.

I went looking for it.

I am using the ADP1 version of it at the mo.

I briefly skimmed through an article on it and read 13th October but that may have been the US release date for it :(

Ooooh. Just found something else. A new widget that is pre-installed. Power Control it's called and spans the width of one of the home screens with buttons to turn bluetooth, wifi, gps, sync, and backlight on and off.

You "rooted" yet Steve? I can't remember if you went for it in the end?

phil

Cheers Phil. Yep fully rooted

Does it need a manual file update then, to get v1.6? I'll have to go looking for instructions as I can't really remember how I did it first time round :o

Nah! I got this version:

[ROM]TheOfficial DONUT TMO US/EU & AOSP-1.6_r1.2 (dream/sapphire32B)[10/12/09]-v2.0.2 - xda-developers

It's the modified version. I think the one you linked to is the stock "un-rooted" version.

It advises having the up to date Cyanogen's 1.4 recovery image:

[uPDATED 7/26 - v1.4] Pimped out recovery image with new features - xda-developers

Scroll down to "HTC ADP 1.6 DRC83" and download both the "Rooted-Base" and Expansion pack files.

There are instructions on there on how to do it if you can't remember.

If you don't have the updated recovery image (i had version 1.3 although you did your root after me so may already have it) it can be a bit fiddly to get working but is easy when you know how.

If you do a data wipe you can re-install all the apps you had previously downloaded by going into market then downloads and they should all be there.

It works without the "APPS 2 SD" too so don't worry about that if you don't want to use it although I am and I've got 86MB free on the phone and a 500mb partition on the SD for the apps.

Drop me a txt/PM/google chat/email if you get stuck!

I'm not even sure if the update is out yet or if was planned to be released today but I has it! Phil

Vodafone will be releasing it to HTC Magic users on Monday the 19th:-

HTC Magic to eat Android 1.6 Donut update within days - Pocket-lint

Has anyone tried the Hero firmware on their Magic? I'm not rooted as reading about Columbus updates not going right is bad enough:O

Any opinions of the Sense UI and is 1.5 Hero better than 1.6 Magic?

Thanks for the date. Wonder when it is due for the G1/Dream then? Maybe the same day.

The Hero Rom is pretty slick and I would say that yes it is better than the others although there are problems with installing the Hero rom on other Android phones such as Bluetooth not working, the notification lights not working and a few other little annoyances. That's the case with the Dream anyway (G1) but not entirely sure about the Magic in this instance.

I think the other are catching the Hero rom up slowly but I think they will always keep it one step ahead of the others.

Phil

I guess that your G1 is on TMobile then Phil. If so there was a comment on the last site I linked to:-

Despite their US rollout to the G1 being well under way, T-Mobile UK as usual have said nothing.
I may have to give rooting a try - as long as I back it up correctly first but I think it might pay me to just wait & see what 1.6 Hero (on a Magic) brings first!
  • Author

Yes I got it on T-mobile and missed that line as I skimmed through it.

Typical bloody T-mobile UK then! Glad I have gone and done it myself.

If you want to look into root etc then XDA Devs is a great site for all the info and there should be a guide etc on there on how to do it.

Here you go:

Known by HTC as the Saphire.

Sapphire - xda-developers

Thanks for the proper guidance above Phil!

Knew there would be a 'proper' release of it somewhere, but couldn't get the Google search right earlier, clearly!

Will take a look later.

Cheers,

Cool. Let us know how you get on!

Have been playing a bit more with mine and all seems well and good.

Phil

Not got round to it yet, as I'll do a full reset for it. Can't really be bothered to be quite honest, but the features you've mentioned sound good, so I'll probably do it one day this week.

It took me a total of about 20 mins to do and have the phone and apps all set up how I want it so I think you're just making excuses :P

Phil

I do have an excuse at the moment... the two downloads keep CRCing when I try to copy them to the SD card!:mad:

Steve

That's strange!

You tried doing on a clean formatted card? Might be beneficial to back your stuff up from the SD card and format it and while you're at it create an ext2 partition on there of about 500mb for your apps to be stored on (this will be done automatically by the ROM). I used a Gparted Live CD to do this.

I'm guessing you are using Vista? It has always had issues with copying files around I have found!

Phil

Nope, on XP Pro - trying it at work...

But no file copy issues that I've found at home on Vista systems to be fair.

Steve

Very strange!

I think it was more the early days of Vista that had file copy issues tbh.

Perhaps try it at home and maybe with a different SD card if you have one. can't see why it wouldn't copy a simple 34meg zip file across though!?

It might be something to do with transferring it through the phone (I assume you are plugging it in via USB and mounting the card on the phone?). I think I did it with an external SDHC reader and an Micro SD adapter.

phil

I'm not really in the mood to be faffing about TBH - other files copy across back and forth without problem. I tried a re-download of the files too. Yes, I had the phone mounted over USB.

Steve

God knows then!

Agreed.. I think you have to be in the mood to be doing stuff like this! hehe

Just wondering about this Phil, as I'll make use of the ability to install apps on the SD this time round. Bit confused though; are you saying that the ROM will automatically create the ext2 partition for me? But then you say about using Gparted (although I could use any bootable Linux distro I suppose, to do it this way).

Cheers!

Steve

  • Author

No sorry I meant the ROM will automatically pick up the ext2 partition and install apps to that rather than the internal storage. It is worth it and runs uber fast on mine even with the class 2 8GB card that came with the phone. Having 80mb of internal memory helps with the speed of apps etc somewhat too!

And yes any bootable linuxy thing you have will do that trick. I didn't even need to format the FAT32 partition on the card but did a back up anyway and it maybe advantageous for you to give wiping it a go and see if that sorts your problem out?

Phil

Cheers Phil - with you now. Problem is the G1 'to do' list just keeps on growing

Steve

Done! :woot: (I think ;))

Showing 1.6, registered back on O2, signed in etc (those extra things you don't have to worry about!) - went to Market, downloaded a few things as per the guide.

Did you install the Expansion Pack as well Phil?

Steve

  • Author

Yeh I installed the expansion pack. Thought I would do and I could always just flash back to just the basic rom but it seems fine with it.

Glad you got it sorted. You sort issue out with SD card then obviously?!
