Koni FSD and stock springs on a petrol VRS

Featured Replies

I have searched and found a lot of good posts praising the virtues of FSD's with Eibach springs but not much with stock VRS springs.

My goal is to improve the cornering while maintaining ride comfort as much as is possible as I do a lot of miles and do them on winding roads. I have no big problem in dropping the ride height with Eibachs but am nervous that they will be too firm and came across a post or two about performance not beeing so good with Eibachs on Mk I cars.

Therefore my question to anyone running this set up or who can compare both is what can I expect sticking with the stock springs and FSDs?

Would I be better putting the 'Eibach money' towards a RARB or WALK?

One other thing - there were reports of FSDs failing a bit early. I take it Koni have resolved that one???

pip bahnstormer a Pm he iirc he has FSDs mated to his standard springs.

Thanks Simon, I will certainly do that...and double thanks as your message reminded me that it was bahnstormer who not only had the konis on standard springs but had a WALK fitted which is exactly where I am going at the same time the konis get fitted. The mention of using standard springs was in the WALK thread which is probably why it didn't click with me at the time.

However, I am hoping that info can be shared in this thread as I think it will be useful. I get the impression that konis have been failing more often on lowering springs (bahnstormers excepted) which may be another good reason to stick with stock.

...and a few others. In fact, although I really want to go ahead, I am really dubious about the longevity and quality of the FSD in general when reading some of this.

I'm not aware there's any evidence that premature failure of FSDs is because of their fitment with Eibach springs. The reason there have been so few fail with stock springs is (I suggest) because most people who fit FSDs do so in combination with Eibachs. Certianly KONI and Eibachs are clear that in respect of these two products, they are fully compatitble with each other.

Fair point!..but do these things have a high failure rate nonetheless?

Any failure is unacceptable of course. There have been a few, as shown in the other thread you've already referred to. My guess is that KONI will have put right whatever was wrong - but only time, and experience with replacements, will tell. Still a good product IMO and one of the few ways to combine great handling with reasonable ride quality.

ive driven maters and sibarts, both of which are on eibach springs and FSDs and the ride quality is better than standard IMO, and handkling much improved due to the damping rates of the FSDs. Thats the way id go.

From what I have ascertained, the Koni thing looked like a batch problem. I'd personally suggest this was not unlikley to be a source of east asian cheap internal valve spings made from recycled pop cans. Seems to have only affected the rebound and not the compression of the dampers.
