VRS - Engine problems after 3 days with car

Featured Replies

I'm gutted, mainly cus after falling for my 07 Octy 2.0TFSI Estate with 19k miles, it's let me down with a very low level. Problem is it was serviced only 2k miles ago before I bought it, so I reckon it's going through a litre every 1000 miles??

Other observations - After idling for 5 minutes still getting a lot of exhaust smoke at 1-2000rpm, and loud injector ticking at idle.

Just wondering if this engine is a dud? Has anyone got experience with this?

Shame since I was loving everything else about my first Skoda!

The oil is still on the dip stick, so if I was you I would top it up with a litre pack of VW 504/507 oil so it's up at close to, but just below, the full mark and then take it back to the dealer.

I'd actually say that it was worth rejecting the car as not fit for purpose unless it's something very obvious that won't have affected the engine.

I don't think that amount of smoke is normal unless it was a cold day and that was water vapour.

Ouch, the smoke looks to be blue-ish as well, which means it's burning oil.

I'd definately get that looked at ASAP, especially if it's still under warranty!

Yer, I'd second the oil burning which is real bad news. You could check the spark plugs for oil/.sooty appearance. Check for oil in the coolant, they might have overfilled it during the service maybe. Poss look at rejecting it but you would need to let them attempt a repair first though.

Don't think an oil overfill would necessarily make the car burn oil - it would have to be passing the rings, leaking in through the block (like a busted gasket) or running down into the chamber through the ports in order for that to happen. That said, it does look like it's burning oil, and that would tally with the high consumption.

Get some more oil in it pronto, and get it back to the dealer.

Interestingly, last time I was at my local dealer I was approached by a guy in an 07 vRS who said he was having loads of trouble with his using a huge amount of oil, and they were struggling to find the cause and were telling him that it was within tolerances. He wasn't happy and asked whether mine was doing that same - it wasn't, but then mine is diesel so not really comparing like with like.

Within vw tolerance... Just. Mine uses a lot too but doesn't smoke like that. Do you baby the engine?

The smoke does look bluish in colour, I wonder if a leaking turbo oil seal would cause this as unburnt oil could be forced into the induction system.

Thanks for all the replys. I had taken the vrs estate on a 400 mile trip the day after buying, to see what it could do with load carrying:), performance:thumbup:, fuel economy (averaged about 33mpg:O). It got the thumbs up on all counts. Didn't thrash it too much though. Engine power was great dispite high oil consumption.

There didn't end up any oil in the coolant because the header tank was clear pink coolant colour. I like the theory about turbo seal oil in the induction manifold, but might never know because having bought it from a dealer I was able to reject the car. To my relief they had little problem with this. Beware at auction, because this is apparently where it will end up if it has a problem!

The upshot is the dealer mechanics after a top up and another 200 miles say there is no problem with the engine. I'd have the car back because it's otherwise everything I wanted. Only fear is, even with remaining warranty, it sounds like an uphill battle if there's a problem. If VAG says 1 litre oil every 1000miles is normal, they must be in damage control mode for a common problem. To think the 2.0T FSI engine has won best engine awards 4 years running? Obviously not judged on durability! I thought an 07 would be safe because the engine has been in production for a couple of years already, any initial quality problems well and truely sussed out by VAG.

Back into the Primera GT drivers seat for now, but can't wait to find a good vrs estate (maybe a diesel next time!)

I cannot believe they have given the car the all clear looking at the picture of the blue smoke from the exhaust.

I for one wouldn't have it back and I think you were spot on rejecting the thing

Good luck finding that replacement.

What rubbish some dealers try to get away with.

Blue smoke/1000 miles per litre consumption is NOT acceptable....so between each 20k long life service you buy 4x 5litre containers of oil to satisfy its thirst??...laughable.

If it's of use my dealer had one on their forecourt recently, checked the site still advertised.

Skoda Octavia 2.0 TDI CR vRS 5-Dr Estate

From min to max is about 1 litre so your is using 1litre per 2000 miles. High oil consumption is very common on these engines but I must admit it is ridiculous. Mine has been used 1 litre per 1200 miles since I bought it but I think it is getting better since I have owned it, My mate says it is not smoking much now lol.

Apparently the general feeling is that its due to babying the engine from new so the piston rings glaze the cylinder walls which lets oil past the rings.

Mine was stuck on the motorway for all its life so I believe was not thrashed, must be a shock to it now :D

Mine also runs,Idles and drives spot on so I'm not worried.

Roll on remap in November .
