Help me to buy Windows 7 please!

Featured Replies

Right, I have 3 laptops in our household, 2 running Vista (32 bit) and 1 running XP home.

I 'think' for the XP machine it needs a complete install, therefore wiping the data I have stored on it, whereas the Vista machines should retain the files/data etc thats on them already? Is that correct?

OK, which one to buy?

Whats the difference between Microsoft Windows 7 Home Premium, Full Version (PC DVD): Amazon.co.uk: Software and Microsoft Windows 7 Home Premium, Upgrade Edition for XP or Vista users (PC DVD): Amazon.co.uk: Software

Apart from the price of course?! Will the cheaper one work for my intended XP upgrade? If it would, whats the expensive version for?

Also found this Microsoft Windows 7 Home Premium Upgrade Family Pack for XP or Vista users (PC DVD): Amazon.co.uk: Software will this family pack be OK for me to upgrade my 3 machines? (1 - XP and 2 Vista)

Thankyou in advance!

For the upgrade you need a qualifying OS installed on your computer such as XP or Vista. For the full version you do not and you can transfer it to another computer if you wish to.

The 3 user set would work for you so long as your existing windows are all legal and full copies, and you may even need the install CDs or a recovery partition on your hard drive. I bought a pre-order at a discounted price back in August, and it was delivered yesterday.

If you have had your computers for a long time, and installed and uninstalled programs, then a clean install would be sensible. BUT be very careful that you back everything up. If you use on-line email and diary rather than outlook or outlook express, it is easier as there is less to back up. So much depends on what programs you have and use.

I have just installed W7 Home Premium as an upgrade from vista on a 2 year old laptop. It did not move across some of the programs, so i have given up and installed a fresh version of W7-64 bit. Now i am going through the horrors of reinstalling everything.

BUT, W7 did put all of my old program folders, files and documents into a folder called windows.old, so i should be able to get at most things from the hard disk itself.

Can you use Outlook/outlook express with Win 7 - RC says not -but then I prefer Live mail -so much better ,and easier to set up accounts with .

Why would anyone want to use Outlook Express?? Horrible program!!

If you want something that looks and feels similar, but WONT randomly scramble your saved files, try Mozilla Thunderbird.
