Fair price?

Featured Replies

Hi,

Took a test drive in a Octavia vRS diesel today, 57 plate with 33,000 miles.

Loved the car and how it drove. Marked as ~13.5k but room for a bit of sway on that, standard spec.

What would be a good price to aim for?

Cheers

Well, for less then 3k more you could have a brand new one from dtd!

Sounds too much to me.

I paid £12,600 for a 57 plate, registered in 08, brought in january 09 with 4000 on the clock from a dealer. Mines a vrs pd tdi in silver.

@m0bov - tell me about it! Would like to get a new one, but that's a stratch too far the mo unfortunately

Especially with the VAT offer running out soon.

@earos74 - that sounds like a good deal for that mileage! Wishing I could find one with that mileage/age!

I know I could get the price down, I was ideally wanting something with less mileage - seen one marked as 12995 with 21K on the clock, 57 plate (Nov 07) at a dealer a bit further away.

Sounds too expensive..

6 weeks ago I purchased a 2008/08 VRS PD diesel Estate from main dealer. Less than 6000 miles on the clock. Under £13,500. Standard apart from rear parking sensors. Was up for £13,995. Cash purchase so no PX to rip me off on!

Offer 11k and see what they say, quote them the offers on new Octys and resale values of the old shape.

Search nationally on the Skoda site - lots around that age; for example one I looked at at the w/e only had 21k on it (57 plate) and was marked up at £13k.. and got the impression plenty of room for negotiation on that one...

Interesting, thanks all. Sounds like there's generally quite a big of bargaining to be done with second hand ones. It's always difficult to know, coming to a new manufacturer for the first time, what level of negotiation you can do on them.

@Trikster - Yep, I've done that this morning - the one you mention sounds just like one I was looking at online which was 57 plate with 21k, race blue - Maidstone? If that's the one, what did you think of it condition wise? It's a bit far for me to go on a whim (have emailed them), so I'd be very interested if that is the one you saw what you thought of it?

Actually the one I looked at was in Poole - seemed generally well looked after, recently serviced, but did have a scuff on the nearside rear quater that would need addressing, one alloy slightly kerbed, and you'd probably want to negotiate some new front tyres into the equation if you were doing any sort of mileage - rate they had 3mm on them

In two minds myself - not over this particular car, but whether to go for a Octavia.. if I did, this one would deffo be in the running. Used car prices have gone up over the past few months so these prices are probably comparable with those who got the deals on the 08 plates earlier in the year.

One question: What does all this 57 plate mean?

One question: What does all this 57 plate mean?

September 2007-March 2008

They change plates twice a year now, instead of the old, once every August

Where you been living lately!?! :D

Cheers

Damian

'57 means the car was first registered between 1/09/2007 and 27/02/2008

From 1/03/2008 to 31/08/2008 would be a 08 plate iyswim

To be fair to you digidoctor, its not been a twice yearly plate change for that long...

Only the last 8 years or so

Cheers

I am german.

There's a 55 vRS diseasel near me with 19k on the clock for £9950

I brought mine from skoda london (willis motor company) but i was offered a race blue same spec, mileage ,year and price from progres bedford but i fancied a silver car more. The dealers didn't compete against each other either. I found mine by accident as it wasn't listed on the skoda find a car website. I used auto trader and ebay(dealers use this) skodas official website and by looking at the dealers website that didnt include skodas listed on the offical skoda website. If the dealer has a new car in, they may not have put it on the skoda website but may have listed it on their own website for quickness.

Then your excused Herr Digidoctor :)

Used car prices are actually rising at the moment, hence why some in demand secondhand cars are not much cheaper than new. My local dealer has been really struggling to source good quality used cars, and those he does get he has to pay a premium for because so many dealers want them. You have the scrappage scheme to thank for a lot of this, and the fact that nobody is selling there old cars at the moment. A lot of the newish cars coming onto the secondhand market are now ex-rental or ex-lease rather than private individuals selling.

For example, webuyanycar.com offered me a price for my car and just recently emailed me again to say they would offer me nearly 1K more than they offered me 3 months ago.
