Felicia tachometer broken

Featured Replies

X Reg Felicia 1.3MPI, recently the tachometer stopped working, seems to be stuck at ~58k miles. after a 400 mile round trip, the tachometer reading increased by a single mile.

Can anyone advise on how to fix? cheers

Hi J242

A little confusing, you say the "tachometer" has stopped working, but then go onto say it is stuck at 58K miles !

I think you are getting confused, I think you mean trip meter, as Tachometer is known as a revcounter giving the speed of the engine.

er yes, got the words mixed up there. I do indeed mean the trip meter. Both the trip meter and the total are affected

Hi Again

You have not said, but does your speedo read ok?

I am not sure with your car but sounds like a cable problem , unless the speedo is reading ok.

The only other thing is its poss the milometer mechanism that is jammed, so it either strip down the clock, or fit another one

speedo reads fine. after resetting the trip counter today it then worked up until 0.6 miles when it again got stuck, maybe as you say its jamming?

would it be something I could repair myself or would it need to go to the garage?

Hi 242

You don't say in your profile where you are, but the question of could you do it yourself I don't know what you are like at stripping things like that down, are you mechanically minded ?

I suspect if you took it to a garage they will charge a small fortune, but what I would do is find a scrap yard that has the same model and buy that remove you old one and fitt that one.

hmm thanks for the advice, ill have a look if it looks complicated, just worried about messing up the speedo or something if i were to do it wrong.

and im in solihull / birmingham

It's the gears inside the clock, a quite common problem. Easiest fix is to find a complete instrument panel from same model type (1.3 mpi) - they are quite easy to take out and swap over. A Haynes manual explains the process.

Obviously your mileage won't be the same anymore (unless you're very lucky) but it's not in anyway illegal. It is only illegal if you intentionally mislead someone who's buying the car, so just take a note of old reading and the new one in case you come to sell the car. Difficult fix is to get just the speedo clock and to take the instrument panel to pieces.
