oil burner!

Featured Replies

My 2.0pd DSG L&K has reached 6,900 on the clock, the display is now advising me to 'check oil level'.Is this normal at this mileage?

I know it's an oil burner but...

Oh dear, I'd get some oil into it promto, I've always been told once the oil warning comes on its too late. Did you do much driving once it came on or did you stop straight away?

I'd always check mine each week or two, esp when running in.

Is this your Dec 06 L&K that's only on 6900 miles? ...mines a year older & on 140,000 :D

Mine asked for oil at 131,000 & again at 139,000 - from other threads I've read, that sounds about right.

It's actually 09 reg bought April this year;just havn't figured out how to change my details!

Recent cars have 2 warning lights, a yellow light to warn you to top up the oil and the old-school red warning to tell you it is too late. One liter per 7000 miles is not alarming for diesels, my VW Golf III 1.9 TDi reached 260.000 km (and is now in new hands) and was also a heavy oil user.

:iagree:

Both of my 2.0TDIs have had a thirst for oil, another quality attribute of the BKD engine. I usually get the AMBER oil warning light along with the 'check oil level' message on maxidot two or three times between QG1 services which is about once every 6k or so.

Its been said already but..........

The AMBER warning light equates to an oil level at roughly the bottom of the dipstick and needs to be topped up soon rather than immediately. Lifting and dropping the bonnet resets the warning light for 100 miles (IIRC)

The RED oil pressure warning + stop message is most likely a FUBAR incident.

Another point - my old PD130 never ever used oil right up to 130,000 when it was replaced SWMBOs PD170 vRS doesnt use it either.

7k is about right. sometimes its more sometimes a lot less.

Just remember to always keep some in the car and ideally check your oil more frequently. As others have said, when its on its too late.

At least it's not the expensive 507 anyway. £15 a bloomin litre.

My PD140 is partial to a drop or two of 507.00. More expensive than Vodka

The rear door pockets in the Octavia are the perfect size for a 1ltr bottle of oil as well.

I wish my 1.9 would use some so i could at least have the pleasure of putting some in

I think you got good mileage out of that before a top up.They will use a bit whilst still running in.

Octavia's seem to have pockets inside the pockets there are so many!!

Audi chucked my Oil in a leather pouch thingy that has velcro on the back to stop it making a mess of the boot.

507 is all she can drink, well, maybe if there is nothing left 505 but ONLY 500ml then get it changed asap.

Not that i have ever had to, the words 'only in exceptional circumstances must you use anything else but 507' frightened me into making sure i always have some.

Many thanks for all your (mostly!) reassuring replies;I do keep an 'oil pack'-those neat little zippy bag things with a litre, gloves etc in the boot after being caught out during a lengthy m-way trip in my previous octy.

Cheers.D.

Same here, I keep a bottle of 507.00 in the rear door pocket (boot always full of tools).

I also carry a bottle of G12 coolant, air compressor, jump leads and a booster pack

Mine used a litre and a half before the first service then barely any afterwards. As others said, a low oil level light means top it up soon. A low oil pressure light means stop now.
