Shocked With Fuel Efficiency!

Featured Replies

I commute 37 miles to and from work every day, and over the last week have been taking it really easy on the way home due to working late so feeling a little sleepy.

In the morning I drive it nice and easy until warmed up and then the go pedal is pretty much mashed into the carpet, as much as traffic permits. I like to get to work nice and early to have a cup of tea and a read the paper. Averaging roughly 34-37 Mpg on the way in.

On the way home, I used to drive the same as I did in the morning, and it took me more or less exactly an hour to get home.

Since I have been driving slowly / economically on the way home because of the tiredness, I regularly see 45mpg!!!! The average from this last tank of fuel was 42mpg!!!! And best of all, it takes me exactly an hour as it did before.

I can only presume that by me driving slowly / economically i must end up averaging the same speed and so getting home at exactly the same time.

I am truly outstanded that a 2.0L petrol turbo can do 45mpg!

Anyone else getting any where near this figure?

Jesus thats seriously impressive - I'd love to get that kind of economy from my vrs CR!

I'm 1500 miles into Skud ownership and I have to say that I am SO not impressed with the 38 average I'm getting in mixed driving. My Punto used to average 50+ on the same route! Many people have told me it will improve but I'm finding it hard to beleive that it will improve 25%+ anytime soon. To be honest I'm pretty p*ssed about the whole thing.

Based on your figures I may as well have had the petrol version!!

Either that or you drive like an old man

You would be suprised, these Skoda engines do seem to loosen up a fair bit.

I was told by my mate / dealer that after about 10,000 miles the engine is nice and bedded in and economy shoots up, which im my case it has.

On the way home, I am driving like an old man, but getting home at the same time as I would if I thrashed it, confusing I know! With the amount of traffic on the road at that time, I must end up averaging the same speed.

Well chuffed!

This'll give you a laugh, I drove my 2.0TDI PD140 to and from Petersfield today - round trip of around 75 miles. Drove the car in a normal fashion obeying all of the speed limits at all times and only booted it once for about a mile when I got on the A27. Overall MPG? 38

I have done the brim to brim test and the trip computer is <1mpg off the true value after some VCDS fiddling.

Granted I have a set of roof bars and the equivalent weight in the boot of an adult male (tools!) but even so I would expect better than that from a derv with over 100k on the bloody clock.

In contrast my PD130 would return over 60mpg when nursed along the motorway.

I did the exact same route in SWMBO's vRS PD170 and I obtained an average of 48.7mpg.

It's done 18,000 miles now but really loosened up at about 15k and the fuel consumption was always around 38-42 mpg prior to that.

/\ Odd - I did a 100 mile round trip to the Yorkshire Dales today involving lots of windy B road driving etc, a trip through congested Bradford and then a blast back on the A1 including having to crawl through traffic as there had been a smash around Wetherby, and I averaged 50.1mpg according to the trip computer.

On the last tank though I got 500 mile from 50 litres which equates to 45mpg which I don't think is too bad for a car this size. This is with only 5k on the clock too so I'm expecting it to improve as it loosens up.

Impressive though that the TFSI is capable of 45mpg - that's very good going. I'll bet the TSI replacement is even better with it being VAG's second attempt at the 2.0T.

It is quite amasing how much difference in MPG there can with extra weight in the boot, we all know how much it costs to run something as small as a moustache, thanks Jeremy!

Roof bars too would make a huge difference.

I work in the aviation industry and know how much more fuel is burnt with simple things such as a door being less than 0.5mm out of perfect rigging, it really is amasing how such a small thing can make such a big difference.

It's a real shame that VAG couldn't give the VRS in petrol or diesel the fuel consumption of the Audi's.

Urban 28.5

Extra Urban 50.4

Skoda TDI CR VRS - Shocking in Comparison

Even better would be the 208bhp TSI from the A4 and Golf GTi

44.1

That would make the diesel purchasers think twice about the Petrol VRS. That said the 170 TDI from the A4 is even better.

45.6

55.4

Thats 9mpg better than the VRS CR on the urban cycle. Come on Skoda give us the engines that are already available. Seat can have them, why not Skoda.

:)

Rant over.

Night

The OP quotes some impressive figures, I've just filled up this evening and I have done exactly 400 miles since last time I refueled and I put in 48.13 litres. This I calculate is almost 38mpg from my 1.4TSI but although I've been driving it gently on the occasional motor way trip most of it is the 5miles to work each day and back again where it barely gets warm. Still it's not done 1000 miles yet so things might improve. On the motorways the Maxidot says it's averageing about 44mpg.

That's impressive; long may it continue

Im sure the cold weather in the mornings (5:30am) are helping my economy figures, I was getting alot less in the summer!

Me too found cold weather helps a lot in engine response! Sincerely I drive too brisky to be able to compare with yours but, I remember a good (at least for me) average of 5.5l/100Km - i.e. about 42mpg along a trip from Germany, about 600Km, car full packed with boys, girls, suitcases, bags, and whatever to completely fill the cavernous boot of my estate and cruising at about 90mph.

About the roof bars. I never used nor think of using them. Did anybody remove them? Any simple how to?

TIA,

I fitted an mpg meter to a car previously. It was easy to see where the mpg rose and fell, so being easy on the go pedal works, ditto going down hills as fast as is safe or legal works too. In urban traffic, frequent stops/starts at junctions can be big sources of fuel use, without shortening journey time. You just end up waiting longer in traffic at the junction, having used up more fuel getting there from the previous junction.

Wow, that is a great figure from the TSI engine. The same engine in my lighter car (Golf) never gets anywhere near that. If I drive like a granny (except round the bends!) and have clear roads then I can see just over 40mpg. Everyday use (and 70/80 on m'way use) seems to give me 32-33mpg and the wife only manages 27mpg (she slows down for roundabouts/corners for some strange reason:rolleyes:). I'm hoping the TDI Oct I've ordered will give us somewhere between 45-50?..

Just for interest I have had 50.8mpg out of my VX220 (2.2 litre NA petrol) on the motorway & easily get 40mpg out of it...even track days only drop it to 26mpg! I can't say this on the VX forum as I'd get stoned!!:D

Lucky man. I get about 7mpg out of my scooby on the track and the best has been 25mpg driving like a granny down to devon with the family. Strange the differences you can get with a 2 litre petrol turbo!

In looking forward to some decent mpg with my new vrs but it only has 70 miles on the clock so i have a bit to go yet to break her in!

They mean roof rack bars, i.e. ones that would be attached to your roof rails on an estate. The issue being those create drag and without even having anything attached to them can make a surprising difference to economy.

The roof rails on an estate will make a small difference I would imagine, but they're fairly aerodynamically efficient in my book, well - as well as they can be!

HTH,

Steve

Wow, that is a great figure from the TSI engine. The same engine in my lighter car (Golf) never gets anywhere near that.....................................:D

The lighter car is the Octavia by 100Kg !! The Mk6 Golf is lighter than the MK5 Golf by 158Kg so 58Kg less than the Octavia.

Er...that's interesting.

I've just done a quick check on the Golf Mk5 GTI weight, it's 1328kg

The Octavia's is 1450kg for the petrol & 1485 for the CRD.

This isn't really much of a shock as the Octavia is a bigger car even though it's based on the same chassis.

Where are you getting your figures from?

Yes, that's correct. The Octy is heavier.

I thought you were talking about the 1.4TSI with the good mpg figures.

Ah, well - depends which TSI of course! :)

Revo can boost the bhp on that engine to 205bhp!! 1.4 with 205, :D

and 220 out of the 1.8.

Yes indeed, as can others :)

If it's got a turbo, it's fair game really

Nice MPG figures. We better all buy a 2.0T instead :D

That A4's mpg is amazing. 6.9 to 60 and will do 155mph not bad for a car that size. See, imagine THAT in a VRS.

I was on a remap difference hunt around just now and remembered that Revo tested my PD engine at 192bhp as standard and thought I'd see if they had anything stock figures on the new CR version. (Superchips had a stock PD at 185bhp)

They have:

193bhp stock, 208bhp after remap.

373Nm Tourque stock, 435 after remap.

OEM figures are 170bhp and 350Nm
