Anyone lucky enough to have their Yeti already outside care to see what tyres are fitted as standard, please?

I was talking to a couple of Octavia Scout owners today (the gliding club at the airfield where I work is as much a Skoda owners club as a gliding club!) and they reckon their standard-fit Dunlop SP4s are great in the dry, pretty good in the wet but not much cop when the air temp drops below + 5 degC or so.

Scout tyre sizes are the same as the Yeti on the 17" wheels (225/50-17)

Hi aerofurb,

seen three different tyres so far on the Snow-monster in the 225/50/17 size.

Dunlop SP1

Pirelli PZERO ROSSO

Goodyear Excellence

Of the three think the Pirelli would offer the best traction.

Got involved in a thread on this subject on the Octavia II forum with a Scout owner.

They were looking for all season tyres and came up with the following which I think are ideal as future replacements, bit pricey mind but most branded tyres in this size are.

mytyres.co.uk - Details: Goodyear Vector 4 Seasons 225/50 R17 98V XL AO, M+S marking

Others on this thread mentioned the Dunlops were poor tyres for wintry conditions.

Most tyres in this size are designed for high performance saloons, so what possessed Skoda to opt for this size for it's two semi off-roader's I don't know.

Edit

Oh another option are an SUV tyre Bridgestone Dueler HP Sport

Thanks for that, Plumber. They may have said SP1s not 4s - I'll check.

I've had Michelin Pilot Primacy 205/45W16s on the Fabia from new (standard fit) and they've been very good throughout - even in the snow and ice last winter. Fronts last 25000 and rears double that.

Looking at some of the on-line guides this tyre is available as a 225/50W17 so perhaps I'll go for that again when the time comes. I'm not looking for an off road tyre just a competent all rounder.

I'm planning on not getting stuck this winter (would be very embarasing in a 4x4 ;) so I have ordered theese dekkonline.com - Nærmere informasjon: Gislaved Nordfrost 5 225/50 R17 98T XL med pigger, med felgbeskyttelse which I will install on the Dolomite rims that the car is delivered with.

I think I will install the summer tyres (whatever the car is delivered with , has been mostly Dunlops on the cars I have seen) on Annapurna silver/black rims. The Annapurnas are not available in silver/black just yet, but i hope they will be when summer comes the next time :)

I would not recomend using the tyres the cars are delivered with in snowy icy conditions. A tyre that I think is really good if you want a good unstudded winter tyre for use on mostly wet roads is the Continental Winter Contact TS830, it has won several tests over here, and should be very good for UK winter conditions. They are expensive though..

The UK grinds to a halt for the three days we get 5cm snow - every winter, Jon. It's something we Brits just can't cope with, so need all the help we can get.... :(

Jon, the favoured tyres in Norway may not be the best in the UK. We have similar driving conditions in winter here in the brotherland to the south, so I have ordered mine with Goodyear Ultragrip 7+ on the original 16" alloy wheels. The reasoning is my past experience with them on my Ocativia and that they have the best wet rating and came in #2 in the overall ADAC test this year. We do not need studs and they are not allowed in several European countries to the south, like Germany.

Next spring, I plan to buy 17" wheels and probably Michelin Primacy Hp in the right size. Again, I have very good experiences with the Michelins on the Octavia, and they are very quiet.

My driving will be mostly local, with some business travel in Germany all year. No plans on getting to the real snow in Northern parts in winter.

I am aware of the different winter conditions in central europe/UK/DK and the law against studded tyres compared to Norway, and that was why I recomended a winter tyre built for central european winters :) According to the swedish magazine Bilnyheter, biltester och allt annat om bilar hos Teknikens Värld the tyre I recomended Continental Reifen -ContiWinterContact TS 830

is made for european winters. It might be OK in DK and UK as well ;)

I have a YETI SE 4x4 TDI (140) with Dunlop SP Sports.....they appear to be fine. Having had a Mini Cooper a few years ago, I woud say that this YETI on these tyres has Mini Cooper road holding qualities. I am very impressed.

WOW That good? If the Yeti is as good as the Cooper, I'm going for the Monte Carlo.

The test results were about the same in ADAC, with the Conti winning. However, I favoured the #2, as it was the best in the wet, which is really what we have most of here and far down into Europe - and I already have a set on my Octavia. They have done very well in the loose snow we get here on occasion.

Nothing wrong with either in any case.

Skål!

Mine are Dunlop SP's

Regards

Mike
