I spotted some 5/40 fully synthetic 505.00 and 502.00 spec oil at £3.99 per 1l and £17.99 per 5l at a local DIY/homewares place call The Range:-

They don't show it on the website but it's definitely in-store. I think it's probably Carlube Triple R stuff. I'll double check next time I'm there.

If its a PD Diesel you have, you need at least 505.01 spec oil.

505.00 is not suitable for a PD engine, neither is 502.00. the .01 is important.

IIRC they did have some diesel variants. I didn't check them as I have a TSI, but will look next time.

The ones I saw both there and lidl were only suitable for the none PD SDI, TDI 90 and TDI110.

Guys please don't take this the wrong way but it never ceases to amaze me why people try and save money on oil. Its the lifeblood of your car and you owe it to your engine and youself to fill it with good quality lube.

As I said the cheapy oil is only suitable for the non-PD engines.

It meets the VW505.0 standard so is fine, but the PD140 requires 506.1/507 so it's got a fresh 4L of mobil1 esp to see it until the next service.

If you're getting *better* quality oil pay more, if you're getting the same quality without the advertising budget or dealer markup don't pay more. IIRC VAG aren't an oil company so even their OEM oil is supplied by others.
