The Bonnet Grille.

Featured Replies

here are a few pics of the bonnet grills Ive made they are moulded to shape so they look like they should be there.

I have posted some to show the diff between the Ripspeed mesh Woo7dy and I have on ours and the Ebay mesh that Bowders1 put a link for in his bumper mod.

to do this mod you need to strip the 3 components apart and keep the body coloured part safe so as to not scratch.

Then cut off the clips on the silver surround and smooth them so they are flush with the rest of the back.

Measure out the mesh using a template of the inner area of the surround and leave about 5-10mm extra so you can bend it round the edge. whne you have bent it round the edges you will need to mould it into shape as you will see when you are doing it then put lots of glue on it and hold it in place. It is hard for me to describe as I just do it but cant say how lol.

then you can start on the black grill bit that you will need an angle grinder for. all you do is cut out the slats. imagine opening a tin can from the side wall.

next time I make one Ill take pics and post them.

once all this is done the black backing that had the slats on will clip back into the coloured surround but you will need to glue the silver bit into the coloured surround so if you are gonna do this then thats it, there is no going back and you will need to buy all the bits again.

this is the diff in the mesh sizes.

here is one of the Ripspeed(top) Ebay one(bottom) the ebay one is preped for fitting to the surround.

Well done Billy,

The mesh I used was actually bigger honeycomb than the ebay one you listed. Mine was 20mm x 8mm as aposed to 12mm x 8mm so the holes are longer. Which is more in line with the Milotec grill holes.

Like the picture of it against the laminate floor, looks good with the vrs badge too i'm sure. But without it, it looks very clean and smart!

I've always planned on doing this but am afraid of ruining the grill sections that need to go back on. That's the problem with plastic, it snaps! Well seems to alot whenever I try to do anything with it. My patience perhaps? :shhh:

Incidently, where abouts are you in Cardiff? My girlfriend is at Cardiff Uni and i'm down there often. At least once every 2 weeks, usually more! Maybe you can show me how the grille is done next time i'm down... Hint hint :P

lol can do mate, I am up the top end up the 469 lol. just let us know mate n ill meet you somewere so long as I not workin.

the one I got off ebay is the one I ordered from the link you put up? He must of sent me the wrong stuff. I thought it was a tad small.

oh well Ill order some more n see then make another one up with it.

cheers fellas. just to show it off again as there is a lad wantin one so when I make his ill post more pics of each step.

How much are you charging for them all made up?

Theres that massive Tesco extra just off the A48, near the underpass with the colourful arrow decoration things stuck to the wall. Perhaps that would be a good place since I don't know the area too well and that's next to the Talybont residences where I stay. Some weekend in the future perhaps!

:(

oh sorry, my bad(slap on wrist smiley)

:rofl::rofl:

I think I have managed to attach a picture of the front grill on my car, as Billy said this was done by him and I am VERY chuffed with the result! Has been on there about 2 months now and looks brilliant still, no chips or dents and I have already had 2 other Octy drivers ask me about it (I told them about you Billy!!) It's a refreshing change, I think you need to have the milotec grills and LCR splitter to pull it off, looks even better lowered but I'm scared of going that far! I am surprised your not selling these by the dozen Billy, people who even dissed my Skoda when I first got it have even said it looks nice and sporty now lol!

Here are a couple more pics, finally managed to work out how to upload them! It's a bit cleaner now Billy from when you last saw it, well happy with the car now; I loves it! However I like having a rare grill, not sure if I would like loads of other Briskodians with the same one!!! Just to assure anyone thinking about getting this done, Billy's craftmanship, effort and devotion in doing this is 100%, you will be happy with the result (and no, I'm not his PR man!)

WOW she is lookin ace mate, so much cleaner, have you had it detailed? looks good mate, the splitter is even better than I remember, I might need to do mine again! Was gonna PM you to see if its all holding up well, hows the manifold thing holding too?

think I need to go sort mine out now and get the little wing thing sorted too. Cheers for the big up lol, I like the fact that there is only a few grills like that lol.

(these 2 threads can get put together if you want forgot I did 2)

Thanks mate, alot of the fact it looks great is down to you though lol! Na not detailed, I had that valet done caus of the lack of a hose and stuff, cost me 50 but was well worth it I reckon, it was just soooooo dirty, probably a years worth of crud (sand, mud, flies, dust....!!) It's easy to keep clean now as they put a layer of something on it so it shines just after a quick rinse.

Yer splitter looks ace dun it, just love the whole look of the front end now. Would love to have some rims like yours, lowered, FMIC etc etc but this is the end of tinkering for me (for now!)

Get yours sorted out??!! What is there to sort out, you blimmin perfectionist! Have you fitted your rear splitter yet? Would be interested to see what that looks like.

Yer mate, if you have two threads going, join them together in one big Billy bonnet grill special!! It appears there are quite a few people interested in it, way nicer than those weird Milotec ones! Still glad about keeping it silver and not spraying the surround black as some people are asking you, I agree it looks better standard silver as otherwise it just looks too black and boring; and I would know as my previous one was black and I hated it after a few months!

Anyways, glad you like it - Hope your not working too hard mate!

Yep he sent me the wrong one too. Luckily I checked it and explianed to him. He told me to keep it(FOC) and he would just send the right one. So I have a 2 full sheets of 12 x 8mm now. As someone else gave me another one

Will be having a go at the grill in a few weeks.

lol yea mate, think ill get some of the proper stuff and try it just to see,

Woody, the drivers wing is horrid on mine after I was egged years ago and with polishing it I had to spray it as I went down to the black base coat(ages ago now) then I took that off and tried doin it again and just made it 100 times wors so I really need to get a new Wing off another black vRS that is not bent or resprayed but trin to find one from a breakers is proving hard lol. If I just got this one resprayed I would want the whole front doin so it looked the same but I just dont know.

again glad you still happy mate, I love doing stuff like that to cars as I love mine and love the fact that othere ppl take pride in theirs too. hope you love yours for years to come.

Still not had time to put the rear one on yet, cant wait tho. Its the plain black plastic one so it looks the same as the splitter. cant wait, am prob gonna go get another splitter too as mine has a defect on one side were instead of it being mottled it is shiny for some reason.

just yours looks so perfect and smooth.

lesson practice on others first lol.

Oh yer I remember you showing/telling me now, well yer I know what your saying; difficult decision - Both are potentially a real ball ache and pricey....I take it the car wasn't egged this halloween?!! Mate I'll love this car until it dies at hopefully 150k miles or more! Are you thinking of changing your grill then to the eBay mesh? I think I prefer ripspeed stuff tbh but everyones different, I suppose it does match the Milotec lower ones a little better but still, I like mine! Also regards the LCR splitter, I have not grounded it once since being at yours last (have got the technique down to a T when leaving those horrible drop car parks/drives etc!). Well I suppose replacing yours will only be £25 plus some elbow grease, if that makes you happy and stop moaning that mines better lol!!

Thats 2 nice looking Octy's there.

The TD2 wheels you running are they 18's and is there any difference in weight compared to Spiders. Little bit off topic i know just curious about the weight of the TD2 wheels and if it actually makes much difference too the feel of the car.

na mate no eggs this time lol, mind I was out working so they had no target lol. it is an art lol trying not to scuff it lol, good thing is tho they are strong and flexable lol.

yea thats it tomoz i am off to the steelers to get a new one lol, Ive made a decision, prob wont stop me biatchin bout it tho lol.

The TD pro race 1.2 I have on mine are 18x8 et 35, 225 40 18 rubber they are so much lighter than the 17" spiders mate, I had some replica 18x8 mk 5 R32 rims on and they were heavy and the car felt very unstlble under heavy breaking and high speeds, now it feels so much more pleasurable to drive and breaking is improved accel is a tad better and high speeds(on airfield) feels so much more planted.

plus as a bonus I get 4mpg on adv more than the old 18" replicas lol.

wel worth £700 for them, was a tos up between OZ super/Ultra leggeras (9kg each iirc and £1300+) or these for £840ish till I found a fella doin a deal.

billy

sorry forgot the TD 1.2 also weigh 9kg each. Tyres weigh similar lol.

To revive this thread

I am unsure on the way to go with this, I am looking to make some of these grills just as a bit of fun and something to do seen as I dont have a job. The one thing is tho I cant lose money on them.

I have broken it down so the only thing that I will need is the painted bit from the buyer

For all Brand New OE parts it is going to come to £121 which will get you:

NEW Silver Surround OE

NEW Black backing with veins cut out

NEW Skoda Badge OE

NEW Mk1 vRS Badge

NEW Mesh either Ripspeed or a new one Ive found like the Milotec just smaller(Mini Milo)12mm/5mm

or

I can get hold of some Replacement Parts that have the OE P/N on them but they are not OE for £85 but again I will need your Painted bit.

What I was thinking of doing was

I make up a new silver surround with the mesh in it as this is the longest part to do and get the veins cut out of the black backing. When someone wants one all they need to do is send me their complete grill from their car through the post, I get it MAX 2 days later and fit the already made parts and put back in same packaging and send back to them the same day, you get it back within 4 days of sending it. How does that sound?

I would appreciate any ideas on how people wouldn't mind doing this and any ideas on how to speed up the proccess.

Also whether you think it is worth using OE parts or just get the Replacement front grill and sell them like that?

When you send your grill I would look at the parts to see if I could use either of the 2 Parts again and if so I would nock money off, send you a PM/Email invoice through Pay Pal, soon as Payment is RX the Completed Grill is posted so you can fit it on to your car soon as you get it back?

cheers for looking

Billy

Hey Billy,

I Had a go at doing mine today. Still waiting for the sealant to dry, hopefully put it back together before Monday and will show some pics. Hardest part was triming the mesh to size and getting it to bend nicely around the chrome section.

  • Author

yea mate it is a pig and the bigger the mesh the harder. the Ripspeed I have was a doddle lol but the stuff I used on Davor's one was a bit of a pain.

Cant wait to see mate,

billy
