Service: switching from variable to fixed ?

Featured Replies

My 1.6 MPI came from factory with variable services, approx. every 30.000 km, with 0 w 30 oil conform to VW 503.00.

I'm now over 200.000 km and i was asking myself if would it be possible/recommended to switch to fixed services (15.000 km).

If that's the case, wich grade and VW specs should have the oil?

Thanks in advance.

It's easily possible, but unless your annual milage has dropped so that variable service would mean only servicing every other year, why would you want to switch?

My mileage is quite high, let's say that i drive 30 k a year, but i thought about switching to a 5W30, and following the user manual is possible with services at 15k.

I'm aware of the fact that newer cars have long-life with 5w30, some says is valid also for "older" ones (mine is a 12/2004) but i'm in doubt as is my case or not...that's it.

Variable service came in on the Octavia 1, in 2001 if memory serves. I don't use it myself because it would mean only servicing every other year. With your milage I'd have no reservations about using variable.
