Sluggish in second

Featured Replies

Good evening all, has anyone got or driven the new 1.6 CR TDI engine? Its a great performer only for one thing.......Feels like terrible turbo lag in second gear, there is almost nothing to start and its needs some mighty revs and then nearly rips your head off....Is this normal or am I just expecting too much?

Thanks

if you are below 2000 rpm when in second, don't expect much, they have very little torque at these rev's. You will need to adjust your driving style. The joy of modern common rail diesels.

You'd think with modern 'drive by wire' technology turbo lag/lurch could be mapped away more by now.

1.6 Diesel is pure punishment.

Is it...Why? Apart from the 2nd gear lag, the new 1.6 cr tdi is great. Power is the same as 1.9 pd tdi and also is nowhere near as loud...Yes, its not the same as petrol but thats the point....soon the old slow diesels will replace petrol as the faster car...( Hope! ) they are already cleaner...my RFL is £35.00 per year....I like that!

I totally agree, this is great that VW have got the same power output from this 1.6 as the 1.9....so why cant they spend a bit more time researching the refinements too?

Yes.....true. Hopefully it will losen up after a 1,000 klm or so....The rest of the gears are fine plenty of punch and already getting around 700 miles on one tank of 55ltrs so I reckon give it a couple of weeks and this will be a excellent car for power...economy..comfort..etc:thumbup:

I've had mine since Wednesday now and, whilst I agree it's not the fastest car in the world, it's smooth enough and nice and quiet. I've just gone from a DSG PD140 and I certainly notice the lack of oomph, but it's not as bad as I thought It'd be.

You'll get used to the fact that you'll have to use first gear a lot more than you'd like and will need to keep the revs up if you want any kind of performance.

All I'll say is, when all the boy racers on here go on about how great the petrol vRS is, it's costing them around twice as much per mile to drive as your "humble" diesel just so they can get away at the lights a bit quicker:P. And at 70 with the cruise control on, there is absolutely no difference in performance.

Well, there is... about 10p per mile

and less chicks for sure.

hopefully it will improve as it loosen's up. A 1000 km is a little optomistic.

700 miles to a tank? Impressive!!

Digi... Stuff the chicks - they cost a lot more than the difference in MPG! :D

Yes they do...Lol....But as married for 11 years...two kids...mortgage....own businesss to run...etc,etc,etc....The days of pulling chicks have long gone...mores the pitty.....Dammmmm!:rotz::eek::confused::mad:

Thanks all....Like I said just done first tank and got 687 miles with 35 left in reserve so this is good. But as she has now done near on 900 miles and still sluggish in second...I feel this will be the penalty for eco-driving..Oh well no chicks but some spare cash for a pint or two....Lol

Also don,t give it too much boot below 2000 rpm they don,t like it but you know that probally anyway.Even so it will loosen more with more miles on and thats great MPG you are getting too.Enjoy

it shouldn't matter, there is no aggressive torque until 2k onwards, and even then it's delivered smoothly. They are not like the pd which could be described as a on off switch in the way it delivers its torque.

The mpg is mind blowing, and to be fair it's fast enough too...Anyone who gets a chance to take a test drive, will see just how good ( apart from second gear ! ) this new 1.6 really is.

Enjoy your new car, what's third gear pull like?

Yes agree with that but as you know with the PD those chocolate flywheels don,t like it

I hope the CR is more refined and modified by now.

Fewer, but classier.;)

The 1.6 Tdi CR engine is much more refined and smooth compared with my old 1.9 Tdl SLX with its 110 Hp. I do miss the low down torque from the govened tickover of the 1.9, it would pull away in any gear but if you loaded the engine up too much at this speed, it would stall very suddenly. that I don't miss. I don't think the turbo on the new 1.6 has the same effect on the power delivery as the old 1.9 it's just a different engine altogether with different characteristics. Incidentally, I havn't found the intercooler yet on the 1.6, does it have one?

Another thing I like about the new car, It dosn't have that "Thummyness" of the old 1.9, totally smooth at least above 2k.

Drive it like a petrol car and enjoy it, and remember it's only using half the volume of fuel.

Pull like a train in 3/4/5 Thanks:thumbup:

Indeed had the flywheel issues on both my pd's but hopefully the cr will show that this is now a thing sent to the history books,,,,:)

Nope have'nt looked for the intercooler yet either...And the "Thummyness" ? I can only think you mean that lovely tractor sound track the 1.9 has, no I don't miss that and yes I will drive it with a bit more man power very soon:)
