To Wii or not?

Featured Replies

I am not really a hardcore game player, the last time I really played any games was when I was back in Uni (95-99), and then it was things like Doom, Doom2, Quake, CTF, Fatal Racing and that sort of thing. I don't have the attention span to play things like Civilisation, World of Empires, etc.

I do however quite like the concept of the Wii; however as I live by myself, I would either need to hook up with other people online to play games (if this free/easy?), or just play by myself

If I were to get one then I would probably shell out for the wii fit stuff too (although I cycle as a means of keeping fit), it would seem if I had that I would be more likely to keep using it - especially in the winter months when cycling in the dark/rain after work is much less appealing.

I think that (some of) my family will be visiting me over Christmas, so that would seem like a good fun thing to do rather than just lounge about on the sofa too

Thanks.

The Wii, with Wii fit and Wii sports is a fantastic family console. I regularly pull muscles I didn't know I had trying to beat my kids at Baseball and ten pin bowling!

And it's tons cheaper than the other consoles...

and you CAN actually keep fit using it (boxing and step aerobics are the best for keep fit stuff...)

Isn't there a new "flavour" of Wii out at the moment, the "plus" or something, in additional I am sure I heard someone muttering about HD too (not that I have an HD TV yet.....)

I think there's a black one coming out soon, could be wrong mind but a friend of mine mentioned it the other day...

More of a Playstation man myself! ;)

The black one is pretty much the same, but as all the 3rd party peripherals are white it makes you wonder why. HD won't be until the next revision. The Wii is a fun little thing and worth having, especially with one of the good Wii fit deals around at the mo, but you need to do your research before buying games as there's a lot of shovelware out there. It's also worth picking up a gamecube pad and hunting down the best games from that system as you'll only pay a few quid each outside of the rare ones.

There's a all black limited edition, but that's about all I can find.

I have game cube, and the associated bongos (and about 3 games) which a previous gf kindly  bought using my ebay account, so I guess those should work with it.

Just a case of finding a cheap wii + fit deal then.

Yeah, it's backwards compatable and it's a good time to buy one right now as there are deals all over the place

There's a black "limited edition" console out any day now but it's the same inside as the old one.

There's also Wii Fit Plus which is the same balance board as the standard Wii Fit with a slightly improved game. Oddly it's cheaper to buy Wii Fit and then get the Plus software separately!

I bought a Wii last weekend, with the fit plus pack - good fun and acy#tually is good exersise . I have to admit that I play with myself sometimes:eek:

That's something I wouldn't make pubilc!

Bets prices I have spotted so far have been from ASDA:

Wii + sport £160

fit +5 access £90 + a bit of delivery

overstock.com

wii + sport £160

fit £72.07

+delivery = £252.50

Can anyone who has got the balance board tell me if it states you have to place it on a perfectly flat surface? I'd use it in my lounge and it would have to go on a huge rug that has raised ridges all over it.

Thanks :)

I hope not, as I would be using it on the stripped floorboards in my living room, which I suspect won't give me a perfectly level surface (infact it will probably take me an age to find somewhere when it does not rock). However I suspect it will need to have all 4 feet firmly on the floor.

Just picked up a wii + fit pack from ebay for £175 :-)

The board works fine on just about anything, but if it's not level then you won't be either so the balance results will be skewed. If all else fails, put it on a cheap bit of board :)

TBH you don't need anything more than the scart or composite cable as the resolution isn't huge and the games are designed with that in mind. It looks fine when you're using it and the only cable that's noticeable is the one that links the sensor bar.

I love the Wii - it's all about gameplay and control rather than graphics.

Just got Super Mario Galaxy and I love it!

I was thinking about getting one, but then found out that you can only use lousy composite video leads and there's no way to connect an HDMI cable, then there's all the other cable linkages as well, then you've got all the battery packs too... Nah!

The Wii just like the GC before it is capable of chucking a signal down a component cable.. :)

Massive difference over the standard composite cable even on the low res Wii.. :D

You cannot compare the Wii to the PS3.

I bought the Wii a couple of years ago and for family fun it is great but it is no hardcore gamer console.

And it is only good excercise until you find yourself sat down playing tennis/bowling/etc lol.

Mine is connected via a component lead and the picture quality is fine, no HD but the games don't demand it anyway.

I bought the PS3 a few months after and have not touched the Wii since, the kids still play it though.
