ABS doing something Funny on my VRS

Featured Replies

I did some work on the front end of my vrs last week and now the abs is acting oddly! When I slow to an almost stop, say 5 - 10 mph the abs is coming on for no reason. At speed everything works fine but this is bugging me a little.

I had the abs sensors off the car but got them back on intact!

I've been having the same problem for the past few weeks, if I'm braking at slow speeds it sometimes feels like the ABS is kicking in, I'm getting a judder through the pedalls. No fault codes and my ABS sensors both seem to be fine. I put it down to putting new tyres on a couple of months ago which are a lot grippier and also all the wet leaves about at the moment so my wheels are probably locking up more. I'm keeping a close eye on it though

Hey Chicken I think you may be spot on. I got 4 P-Zero tyres fitted while the wheels were off!

I think If the cable to the sensor gets knocked about a bit it will cause the abs to kick in to.

If there is a problem with the sensor or it's wiring, then the ABS light will come on and the system will be disabled.

There are two main reasons for ABS kicking in,one wheel is about to lock up or a reluctor ring is defective.

I've seen the later on many Rovers where the reluctor ring, which is mounted on the CV joint, cracks causing the teeth on each side of the crack to be further apart. The system can't detect the difference at higher speeds so just reacts at junctions during low speed braking.

Chack the air gap between the ABS sensor and the exciter ring is the same on all wheels.

If one (or more) is set too wide then it can cause problems you describe due to low (AC) voltage output at that sensor, which is often more pronounced at low speed.

i have a skoda fabia vrs on a 04 plate, my abs started to kick in too early eventually the warning light came on and it was deactivated along with the traction control. scan shows that it is the front right speed sensor, i replaced this yesterday and checked the wiring, the lights went out without clearing the codes, but a few meters down the road they came back on. i checked the sensor again and cleaned the area. I cleared the codes this time but they came on again after driving a short distance. My opinion is that the sensor which is a new dealer part could be faulty, i was planning to swap the left and right front sensors with each other and read the code to see if it changes from an error on the right side to an error on the left side, this would tell me if it is a problem with the new sensor. first question is will i be able to swap the sensors like that to test them? they appear to be universal, secondly what else could it be? THANK YOU

vrs180, I am having this fault at present, will check the gap now.

The vehicle had a wheel bearing replaced recently so maybe the ring has been knocked in the process.

Forums hey..... where would we be without them! B)

The abs ring that is welded to the hub may of been damaged when the old bearing inner race was removed, you cant get a conventional puller in,when i replaced mine i had to cut the inner race off with a cutting disc. The abs sensor may of been damaged in the process to,if a garage fitted your bearing id take it back to them before you start to strip it down.

Sorted.... as vrs180 said, excessive clearance between osf pulse ring/sensor.

Sure enough, the side where the bearing had been replaced.

See, forums..... brilliant! Thanks for the tips..... again.
