18058 fault code - no dials

Featured Replies

Went over to another members house last night to help him put his ECU back in after a postal remap. Well we got it in ok but first thing we noticed was no interior lights. It started up ok but then when we turned the sidelights on the interior button lights didn't come on... also none of the gauges were working :thumbdwn: Then we discovered the sunroof, electric windows and electric heated mirrors weren't working either

We took it for a drive using my Liquid Gauge to see the revs and speed, and it is running with no trouble, peaking at 18psi boost. There were two stored fault codes 18010 and 18058 which I cleared with the LG (18010 I think is just a code to say the battery has been disconnected as he has had it disconnected while the ECU was off being remapped), however 18058 has come back.

Looking at the fault codes list 18058 it seems to be

"18058 P1650 Data Bus Powertrain Missing message fr.instrument panel ECU"

Which seems to match the symptoms of no gauges etc.

Anyone have any suggestions as to what has caused this? He is calling the remap people today but would be good to know if there is anything else we might have overlooked.

spoke to one of my techs and he said this could be caused by the multi plug for the ecu having water ingress also a possibility of one of the resistors in the ecu being damaged this has been known to cause that fault code

U-oh! Why do people still use postal remaps and removing ECUs? Just asking for trouble IMO.

But anyway...

18058 (P1650) Drive train data bus. No message from combi instrument.

Possible cause, Fault in data bus wire to combi instrument.

This is usually corrosion of the ECU plug due to water ingress from blocked plenum drains. Remove the ECU and check the plug and ECU for corrosion damage. There is also the possibility that a resistor inside the ECU has failed. This is checked by using a multimeter to measure between pins 6 and 7 of the ECU itself and for an AJM or ATJ engine on a car without ESP, this resistance should be between 115Ω and 135 Ω.

Good luck

Thats what I found on google I think, I think that could be the problem as the plugs weren't taped up or protected while the ECU was off in the post and the car has just been sitting there in the rain and cold weather for a week so more than likely some moisture has got in there :thumbdwn:

He's tried disconnecting the battery today but that seems to have engaged the immobiliser so now the car won't start :(

Going to take the plugs off during the daytime and dry them out and see if that fixes it

 - that's just suicide really. The ECU is a pretty fragile bit of kit and having the connections potentially open to the elements is just asking for trouble IMO.

I would think about removing the ECU again and gently taking a hairdryer to the plug connections on a low heat setting...

I just didn't think people did this anymore! It reminds me of 'chipping' in the early 90s!

All sorted now, apparently the remap guy was on the verge of coming down from Cheshire to sort it out (good customer service ) then suggested that a fuse had blown.

My mate had taken some fuses out and moved them around to try and solve the interior light problem as before we fitted the ECU he'd put some LED lights into the interior light fitting and thought he'd fitted them wrongly and blown a fuse, this was all in the dark so couldn't really see what he was doing, well anyway it seems he had blown the interior light fuse and had managed to pull out one of the fuses for the immobiliser and a load of other stuff to replace it with

All fuses are now back in their rightful places and the car is running fine with all lights and dials working.

In this case it was owner error that caused the problem but hasn't helped my opinion of postal remaps, you really are out on a limb if something goes wrong! :thumbdwn:

Glad he's sorted, but it sounds like he shouldn't be put in charge of doing anything other than getting in and out of the car and driving it!

And yes, postal remaps - please don't
