My Brother in laws Octavia 1.6 (W reg) keeps cutting out when cold, it seems impossible to idle until it has done a 3-4 miles to warm up.

Also the Temp gauge seems a little erratic. You can drive for an hour, turn engine off for 2 minutes and then it will read cold until it has done another 5 minutes worth of driving.....

I'm thinking thermostat and some temp sensor (coolant bottle) or the MAF has gone for a sh!t......

Worth changing the coolant temp sensor by the sounds of it, but prior to that a VCDS Scan will pick up if it is open to ground, its not the one on the bottle though, not sure of the 1.6 but usually on pipe leading to the head.

I'd agree; it sounds very much like the EMS temperature sensor, but confirm that with a fault scan before spending out on parts.
