what should I expect to pay a garage to replace timing belt - bolton

Featured Replies

Hey Guys,

Just moved down to Bolton for uni, had to get my fun MOT'd on wednesday - IT PASSED ! and the garage I took it to seemed 'okay' but they're reluctant to give full quotes for anything.

It's due a timing belt, so was wondering -

1. what should I expect to pay for parts + labour (all in)

2. do I need belt + tensioner, or just belt?

3. anywhere in bolton worth looking to? (i'm right in the centre - orlando area)

student budget chaps ;)

usually get work done at home with a friends garage, so get friends prices. never really had to pay full price so don't know what to expect.

cheers,

Rick

you should be able to get the timing belt kit and water pump for less than 100 notes, it takes about 2 hours to change it

my friend has a garage facing the motor bike shop next to the cattle market pub. he is called ralph . nicest bloke you will ever meet , never rip you off try him , he has a mot sign on the road sean

the belt is about 30 note on its own.

Try Parkside on peabody street to see how much parts are.

Depending on your mileage you might need a new waterpump too.

Belt, tensioner and possibly the waterpump is what you will need.

I can ask my mech down the pub to see how much he'll do it for if you want.

Jorilly does a belt for £9.20, a tensioner for £28.99 and a waterpump for £24.99. You'll need antifreeze too if you're changing the water pump. Two hours labour should be plenty as long as there aren't complications.

Hey mate,

the cattlemarket pub is at the entrance to my halls of residence.

What's your friends garage called? can you point it out on google maps? (there's tons of garages round here - needle in a hay-stack)

I had it MOT'd at the fuel injection centre on Thynne street - mainly becuase I can see it out of my window and could keep an eye on them! they were okay, but probably won't have any more work done there.

Tom -

not confident enough to do it myself, plus I'm in student halls and have hardly any tools with me, only small screwdrivers :( I don't think I'd even have the right kind of tools at home to be honest.

it's got about 122k miles on it by the way.

Another recommendation for Parkside Skoda - they are an ex Skoda dealer and I think still an approved repairer - they certainly dont charge the prices that the big boys do.

Parkside Skoda - Homepage

They sell Skodas and the mechs are knowlegable about the older models like Fellys.

Prob best doing the waterpump now, my headgasket died at 120k :(

the garage id facing the avalon motor bike shop , next door they sell gas hatfield garage unit 4orlando works thynne st bl36de 01204 361196 at the roundabout turn right away from town first turning right about 50yds from roundabout ok sean
