clutch / flywheel problems

Featured Replies

hi all, i have a 2002 octavia vrs mk1 that ive owned for about 6 months now.

my problem is that the car judders really badly when pulling away from a standstill or when creaping in traffic, its really begining to anoy me. I bought the car 2 months after a new clutch and flywheel was fitted by vw technica in chelmsford essex. the invoice states labour only and that the customer supplied the clutch / flywheel himself. i found out he bought the whole kit from ebay so i suspect its just a cheapy. the new kit was a clutch, single mass flywheel and thrust bearing & new bolts.

im seriously contemplating changing the clutch & flywheel again as its becoming realy iritating

i was hoping you guys could give me some advice before i go and shed out for a new clutch.

i would like to replace it with another single mass flywheel and clutch because of the difference in costs for a dmf, but i dont want to end up with the same problem.

i guess in short what im asking is. is it a commonly known problem to have these issues with a single mass flywheel? or could it be that the clutch / flywheel that was bought from ebay could just be a cheap defective one? or could it possibly be something else causing the judder?

many thanks in advance for your help and advice.

could the judder be caused by a minor oil leak onto the friction plates? Thus causing the initial clutch to be changed, and subsequent pollution to the new clutch.

ive had a new clutch fitted on mine but its a paddle clutch and that does the same you have to get the revs up for it not to do it fly wheel is still dual mass though ive been told its because contacts of a paddle to a standard clutch are different so it nocks on flywheel only other thing is re conditioned clutches are known for that mines in garage at minute only had it back two minutes after new clutch

no i dont think thats the problem as im not losing any oil, and theres no oil drops/patches where i park over night.

thanks anyway.

i dont think he put a paddle clutch in as he was trying to keep the costs down before he sold it, but the symptons are the same as what your describing if you rev it fairly high and pull away then you dont feel it, but in traffic when your crawling and start stop etc the last thing you want to do is rev it and look a right plonker :)

its almost like the clutch plate is slightly out of shape and when you slowly release the clutch just to the point when its about to bite it only bites on one half of the plate and not the other? i dont know if this is even possible, but thats what it feels like.

any more advice / opinions will be welcomed.

How would you notice if the gearbox oil (Which is separate and sealed) was wheeping into the friction place?

fair point cheezemonkhai, is there any way i could check the gearbox oil level? i think i was having a thick moment and was thinking of the engine oil for some stupid reason :o

Only real way I can think of is to undo the filler hole and top it up, then drive it for a month and see how much you can top up next time.

I remember hearing you could test some gearbox levels with VAG-COM, but I'm not sure if that is DSG only or not.
