I collected my 1.8TSi on Friday. Anthracite with maxi dot and spare wheel only. I have done about 150 miles over the weekend and so far am incredibly impressed with the car but particularly with the engine. I can not believe how flexible it is and how easy to drive it is. It pull cleanly from 1500 rpm and as it is running in I have not taken it over 4000rpm, but have not needed to either. The fuel economy looks promising from the computer showing on 42mpg on a 25 mile run on mainly dual carriage but with some stopping and starting up to 70mph but taking it easy. I expected 35mpg will be my usual average and it looks like that will be the case. I traded in a Ford Focus Diesel and the difference in comfort and refinement is enormous.

I was in two minds when I ordered whether to go for the 1.4 or 1.8TSi and though the 1.4 would have made more financial sense as it was cheaper to buy I am still not sure it would have been much more economical as I expect I would have had to work it much harder to make the same progress as with the 1.8. Maybe when some more 1.4TSi are delivered to you guys some real world figures will prove me wrong on that theory.

Good point dididoctor. Glad I chose 1.8.

I suppose I better get some oil (VW 504 stuff) in case I need to top up. Does anyone know the best place to get it from (cheapest) and which brand should I get?

I love my 1.8 and now it's coming on song much smoother after 1600 miles.

Castrol Edge oil 5w-30 is about £16 for 1L in Halfords. The recommended make is Shell Helix but I seem to recall it being about £24 a litre.
