Weird noise when engine is turned off

Featured Replies

Hi, currently driving a 2 and a half year old Octavia TD, last few weeks it's developed a kinda whirring noise which last for about 5 seconds after the engine is switched off, seems to be comming from the front of the car somewhere... Had it in for a service today (non Skoda garage) they couldn't find anything wrong with it, best they could suggest was it may be the computer system turning off?

Anyone had similar problems / got any ideas what it may be, car has 47K on it and is still in warrantly..

thanks in advance

cheers

Dave

My 1.9 does that and its the cooling fans winding down after switch off.

Its probably the turbo. It keeps spinning after you turn the engine off so that the oil drains from the shaft and the turbo slows down. As with all turbo charged cars its allways good practice to let them idle for a few seconds before switching off. The VAG engines do this for you.

Ask the dealer to make a note on the system about it as it could well be the EGR starting to fail.

Are there any other problems you notice with it?

Sorry mate but that is rubbish! The turbo will slow very quickly at idle and unless you screeched to a halt, leapt out and opened the bonnet in a matter of seconds the turbo would be at a rest. Yes, it is a good idea to let the car idle for a few moments after a long high speed run i.e. motorway speeds, but just driving into the M-Way car park and parking up is probably enough TBH. Reverse parking in a residential area is the same. You are not using enough revs to be spooling the turbo up when parking.

The most likely cause of the OP's noise is this:

It is probably the throttle body on its way out... :(

I've got exactly this noise on my '56 Tdi Fabia. It is coming from a black box anout 100mmx80mm mounted on the o/s bulkhead - right in the corner in fact. It has five or six rubber tubes coming from it, numbered.

Can anyone identify this componenet please? The link above was broken, alas.

I have this too, but had it before on a 407 too, i think there are flaps in the vent system which close up ?

It's the cooling fans for the radiators at the front of the engine - If you're really quick you can get the bonnet up on time to see them still spinning down... The air-con compressor will also sometimes make a hissing/whirring noise after the car is switched off - neither noise as far as I'm aware is any sign of something being wrong.

I've just bought an Octavia Scout 1.8 TSI petrol.

From the first drive onwards (I've only done a hundred miles) the car's engine (or cooling system) continues in the same way. This is a brand new car we're talking about.

For at least a minute or two after I've locked the car the noise continues. The replies in this thread have confused me. Do I have a problem?

Help, please.

Just to clarify, the noise is quite loud, it sounds like a motor is still running, the cooling system or something. It lasts for a minute or two. This happens after most journeys, whether they be 1 mile or 30 miles.

Help!!!! I don't want to go into the garage and find out that this is a standard feature.

Sounds like the cooling fan(s) still running to me. Mine does this (only 70 miles on the car) and my Golf did this too, particularly in hotter weather, funnily enough.

Fan was running yesterday for a good two minutes after I switched off, and that was after a fairly short run.

It's pretty warm out at the moment! I wouldn't worry.

Ah, so this happens in hot weather? I live in Greece.

However, this also happens after a 5 minute trip. Is this completely normal then?

Thanks, by the way.

I am no mechanic, but yes, it makes sense that the cooling fans have to work harder in hot weather (it was up to 30 degrees in St Albans over the weekend - not quite Greece, but still pretty hot) and, on short trips in traffic, not as much air comes onto the radiator as it might on a longer, faster run. Hence the fans kicking in quickly.

Cheers, dunc

I've just been told the same thing by the dealer.
