Best doing it through your insurance as it will be hundreds if you pay for it yourself. Just make sure that all of the plastic bits that the windscreen fitter takes off go back on properly and don't get cracked in the process.

I'd do the insurance way myself. Had mine crack when Autoglass were fixing the stone chips.... I'm sure the advert on telly says it will crack if I DONT get them repaired. Still, my excess was £60 which was much less than the £400 they charged my insurance. It does not affect your no claims if thats what you are worried about.

:+1:, if you have fully comp insurance then stick it through on the insurance. I am due to change the screen again in my Octy as it has another crack in it. My current screen is peppered in chips and a foot long crack :-(

Usually about £50 through insurance

I had 3 chips (2 quite big, 1 small) repaired for nothing through insurance. As everyone else says, £50 for a new one and doesn't affect NCB, so better than doing it yourself for £300

You'd be mad not to go through your insurance. Insurers take the view that it's far better to pay for the odd windscreen less £50 excess than drive customers away by hitting them hard when it happens. Also, your driving doesn't really affect the risk of having a cracked windscreen so it's as close to an act of god that you can get and still have the insurers pay out ('acts of god' are outside the scope of most insurance, although whose god is open to question). They do the repairs for free as, on average, it saves money over the windscreen replacement. Just make sure that they fit the right windscreen (tints, special features etc;) and check the fit of the dash etc afterwards before siging off. Ian
