10W40 GTX in a vRS?

Featured Replies

Couldn't find Castrol GTX 10W40 in the sticky thread at the top.

The receipt for my service yesterday has this listed as the oil they used. Before I call and question this (It's running great, so I'm guessing it's a mistake on the paper work) I just wanted to check this was the wrong oil.

Thanks

Rob.

Yes, it is definitely the wrong oil, assuming they put old skool castrol gtx (mineral) in. AFAIK, castrol don't make GTX anymore, only magnatec and edge.

You should be using a fully synthetic oil which meets vw spec 505.01 (5w40, fixed service interval), or 506.01 (0w30, variable interval), or even 507.00 which covers everything

If you don't use the proper "PD" oil, you run the risk of serious engine damage. Not good!

Yup, that's what I thought... Just wanted to check before I call in on the way to work tomorrow.

Thanks for the confirmation! :D

I thought fixed interval was 5w 40 oil? I know that's what my Quantum Platinum stuff is. (505.01 spec too, as it should be, as mentioned above)

oops, my bad, yes it is 5w40. Well spotted.

Just testing :D

excessive camshaft and follower wear will occur due to the high pressures that these engine components are under when the engine is running

I'm sure I read some time ago that a dealer put 10W40 on the invoice, but actually put the right 505.01 grade oil in.

I would still ring up the garage to check. It's better to be safe than sorry.

Hello reflex88. Ask garage what oil used first, then quote correct oil mentioned by previous members, and a new oil filter required also. You have to take their word they changed oil filter and oil, if car left at garage, unless you see filter and oil replaced??
