1.9 TDI DIY cambelt change

Featured Replies

I've still 2 years to go but I'm thinking about my cambelt. I guess some of you lot must of done it and I'm after some advice. Now I'm fairly competant and have no problem with general servicing at all. But it has been years since I've gone just that little deeper on engines. When I was younger I could do an Imp clutch change in a few hours. But about a 1.9 TDI cambelt. I've read Elsawin and also the Golf manual and it does not seem to be too difficult from what I read. I see I have to order a T10050 locking tool but thats only £20.What I'm after is advice - Is it a hard job ? How many hours for a first-timer ? Any things to look out for which were harder than expected ? Can I use a trolley jack from below when removing the engine mount as opposed holding the engine from above ?It seems I should do the water pump too as it is so easy to change when the belt is off and covers all removed, I just want to know your feedback if you have done the job yourself.

Good question, I'd be interested in the answer too as our Roomster will reach the four year mark next summer and hence need a new belt and water pump. Last time it went in for service at the dealers they were quoting £350 just for the cambelt and pump change, now I know that's a reasonable enough figure from a garage but it would be nice to save their labour rates and do it myself. Who is going to be the ground-breaker and post up a "how-to" guide for the job ?

Just get hold of a copy of ELSAWIN and follow that, its 100% comprehensive. Thats all I did. Its quite a straightforward job.

Thanks Keith,

I'm liking the sound of this 100% comprehensive idea - it obviously bears no relationship to our old friend mr Haynes then !

Will get hold of the Elsawin and start sharpening me spanners.

Mine cost me £10 from Ebay. It wipes the floor with a Haynes manual. It's saved me £100's in labour costs in the year I have had my Octy.

I'd have done a guide when I changed my belt and waterpump but I'd just have been repeating the ELSA procedure to be honest.
