Noisy Tappets/Cam Buckets when cold

Featured Replies

On my 1.4 tdi - only 2+ years old, 37,000 miles - fully serviced by main dealers - when I start up from cold I have a tappet noise or cam bucket noise, this lasts for about 4 miles and then is ok.Is there anything that can be done to stop the noise ? What should I do ?DB.

Hi

Did your car get variable or fixed interval servicing?

You could have a faulty hydraulic tappet and what mean by faulty is (not holding the oil inside its self and allowing it to drain back into sump over night)Its very difficult to find which one is noisy you could end up have to change them all !However it may worth doing an engine flush followed by new oil and wynns hydraulic valve lifter treatment

Hi

Did your car get variable or fixed interval servicing?

The vehicle has been presented at a main dealers and serviced as per the mileage indicated in the Service Book and it is has not been driven hard.

I have followed the instructions above and the hydraulic tappet noise has now ceased - Thanks for the info.

I use Quantum Platinum fully synthetic oil and only put in 2.1 litres (2.2 normal) plus the bottle of 'wynns hydraulic valve lifter treatment' the oil level is showing slightly higher than the Max mark.

Is this OK.

Is it also OK to run to my next oil change (10,000) with the wynns treatment in the oil.

Advice needed please.

You sure it's supposed to only be 2.2 litres? The amf engine in lupo take 4.5 litres

Sorry, my error I should have stated - 'I use Quantum Platinum fully synthetic oil and only put in 4.1 litres (4.2 normal).

Sorted.

I sent an email direct to Wynn's asking the same questions and received an immediate reply on Saturday evening :-

  • Yes. No problem, the hydraulic lifter concentrate is designed to stay in the engine for the life of the oil.
