cold engine generates grasshopper 's sound

Featured Replies

Hello I'm kind of confused and can't help myself here. Now when the weather is cold and air is moist the engine sounds like cricket or grasshopper when it's cold...after ten minutes or so this awful noise disappears. It's kind of embarrassing to smile when people are passing and pricking their ears... Any guess? Belts, rollers, ...? Car itself is 2007 Superb 2.5 V6 TDI, 40K miles. Regards

Possible that the alternator pulley is whining.

Open the bonnet and start from cold - does the alternator belt and tensioner 'jump' in time with the noise? If so then on mine ie was the it's the 'clutch' on the end of the alternator failing.........

Now the summer is gone and misty cold mornings are back. And bask is that noise from the front of cold engine.

Its like grasshopper or cricket...and pretty loud. Kind of weird to sit there and listen to that squeaking...like evenings on the grassland.

Changed some flat belts and rollers, but still the same...

Maybe there are some ideas now?

Regards
