Vibration/knocking at motorway speeds

Featured Replies

Hi all,

I'm getting an irritating vibration through mainly steering wheel but possibly the whole car at more noticably motorway speeds...

It's bearable, but annoying! Had wheel tracking and balancing done twice but it's still there. Is it the bushes maybe? Is this a symptom of them needing changing?

It's a fabia vrs with 60,000 miles if that helps..

Many thanks

Wheel bearing? Worn/mishaped tyres?

Thanks for the quick reply, I guess a garage will be able to check and find what's causing it, I do think the tires are nearing a change so that could well be it!

rear tyres out of shape

Think it is a wheel bearing, noticed what I can only describe as a whining noise coming from the front passanger side as I drive.

Thanks again for help,

Kirk

but that doesn't explain why you asked about vibration/knocking noises at motorway speeds

Could be shock absorbers. They can have sympathetic frequencies at certain speeds - you'll have a scalloped tyre (but only at those speeds). Don't forget the rear - a bad bearing at the rear can show as a vibration through the steering - if the car has had a rear end shunt this is something to look for.

My console bushes were knackered and mine was vibrating quite bad, but had them done and now it's gone, don't know if it could be that?

Could also be the engine undertray flapping about at high speed if it's no longer secured properly...
