MOT due to expire

Featured Replies

Hi All,

Under what terms can you drive a car out of MOT (if at all)? The MOT on my car is going to run out a few days before my new car arrives, and as it's a scrappage deal, I really didn't want to have to put it through another MOT just for the sake a few days, and then scrap it.

Do I have any options?

Thanks

Yeah, leave it on the drive and ask the dealer if they might provide a courtesy car seeing as you're buying a brand new one off them? Would they take it off your hands early and provide a courtesy car?

Don't drive it though. You won't be insured and accidents do happen

I thought all cars traded in under the scrappage deal had to be MOTd?

Edit you're OK - "have a current MOT test certificate before date of order for the new vehicle (or that has expired no more than 14 days before the time of order)"

The MOT can have expired 14 days before the date of order.

To and from a pre-arranged MoT test and to and from a place of repair only AIUI.

Although no MOT = construction and use offence, so not endorsable :P

Simple - book an MOT in with the dealer :)

Hmm, well that's the joke of it. I was given an estimated delivery date of 1st Dec, but the new car has been delayed. At the time of placing the order, I was promised a loan car if this should happen so I wouldn't need to put mine through an MOT, and now a few days before mine is due to expire, the dealer says sorry, no loan cars available. Even earlier this week they said don't worry, we'll sort you out with something. I'm NOT happy with them.

Yes, that's correct - MOT must be valid at the time of order (or upto 14 days before as Tom said) :)

Ask them about borrowing something off their used car stock?

They're rubbish aren't they? I suppose they've got your money and the order so why bother themselves with a little extra customer service?

Although, if they've reneged on their part of the deal i.e. overshot the delivery date, then surely they should be obliged to help you out (Shake Head in Disbelief At The State of Customer Service Standards icon)

Good idea Ken. Bet they don't go for it though

In fairness, I don't hold it against them that my car has been delayed - they gave me a reasonable estimated delivery time of 11 weeks, so I don't hold that against them.

What annoys me is that they have made a promise they can't or aren't going to keep, and they've given me bugger all warning in the process and left me in a hole.

I've paid top dollar for my car having not negotiated anything off above and beyond the standard scrappage offer and this is the customer service I get in return.

I realise I have no right to a loan car, but they shouldn't have promised one 3 months ago to close the deal if they're not prepared to stick to that promise, and that annoys me.

I'm going to send the sales manager an email outlining my displeasure and we will see what happens.

If you think yours will pass and MOT ask them if they can run it through one for you at zero cost.

Why not ask can you trade in your scrap car and leave it with them now. After all you've done the deal it would not matter if you payed the full amount in advance so why should it matter if the scrap car goes in early. Just ask to make sure that this is acceptable with the dealer.

I'm sure I could take my car in and leave it with them now, but what am I going to drive for the next 3 weeks until mine arrives?

I'm sending them an email, and have suggested a car from stock or that they put my car through an MOT.

Thanks everyone for your comments :)

Hmmm, I think it if were me in this position I would either get them to MoT your existing car for you at their cost, or perhaps cover the cost of a hire car for you in the meantime. Do you have anything at all in writing about the 'extra' parts of the deal you've agreed to, over delivery dates and what would happen if the exact situation you're in now did occur?

No, I only have the original order form with estimated delivery date.

They are not denying they offered me a loan vehicle, just that unfortunately they don't have one available. I've now written to them to express my displeasure and outline a few options suggested here in case they hadn't thought of them that would make me a happy customer again. Lets see how they respond.

Ah ha, For your sins Philip you live in West Wales also!

Yep - near Narberth, Pembs. Were are you, if you don't mind me asking?

I've not seen many of us on here this far west.

just tell them you are going to cancel the order, that will get things moving

Thanks all - some good news...

My email elicited a favourable response and a car is now available for me - a Fabia Estate to collect on Monday so my faith in customer service is now restored.

Thanks again for everyone's helpful comments and suggestions - very much appreciated :)

Ah well, that's good news.

And when do you expect your new car to be available?

Steve

Not sure Steve - it's due to be built this week (wk 49) so either I collect it before Christmas or 1st Jan when I get back. I don't really care so long as I have a car to go away in over Christmas and I think I should be able to squeeze the family into the Fabia estate loan car (I'm not familiar with them but they look a reasonably good size from the pics).
