Tyre Advice

Featured Replies

When I took the Fabia into my dealer on tuesday for its MOT, they noticed a screw stuck into the tyre. They didn't have time to do it then (as I needed to get back to work) so I said I'd get it done closer to home when I had a chance.

The tyre has had a slow puncture so it's been pumped up regularly. It has been driven with low pressure, however.

Went to the local ATS yesterday who whipped the tyre off and then proceeded to sharp intakes of breath (their usual act, basically) when they noticed some small bits of rubber inside the tyre. They said the tyre was buggered, and even refused to put it back on the wheel - "more than my job's worth mate"

They kindly offered to put a pair of dunlops on for

 Ah, sounds like typical ATS sales tactics.

If the puncture is close to the sidewalls, it may be unlikely it can be repaired - if it's fairly central, then it shouldn't be a problem.

However, don't drive on the tyre with really low pressure, as that causes a lot of flex in the sidewalls which can damage the tyres - get the spare on for now.

And yes Pilot Primacy's can be repaired!

Rob.

If there was rubber inside the wheel, chances are the damage has already been done and it would be risky getting it fixed.

Don't accept this 'no repair' story on face value. What it really means is 'we can't repair it instantly here'. I've had the same story in the past and when pressed they've agreed that the tyre can be sent away for a permanent repair which involves some vulcanising process. Means 2 or 3 days delay but still a lot cheaper than a new tyre and well worth it if there's plenty of wear left in the tyre.
