Dedicated Servers / Virtural Private Servers

Featured Replies

Hi guys.

I'm looking toward a dedicated server setup for website, e-commerce etc for 2010.

Does anyone have any company recommendations, also what are peoples thoughts on VPS?

Sounds too good to be true really, effectively in my mind it's just a glorified hosting package, with less support.

Answers on a postcard :D

Cheers

Is your site really busy enough to warrant the extra cost associated with a VPS or a proper dedicated server? It's overkill for quite a lot of things in my opinion, shared hosting packages can be fine if with the correct company. :)

Some VPS packages have been coming out cheaper than our current hosting package with current provider. With updates planned for 2010 i thought it may be an idea to move over to another solution at the same time.

To your applications a dedicated server or a VPS will both appear the same, so providing that you have sufficient spec in either case then everything will run fine. Depending on how the provider is using virtual servers, you might find you'll achieve better resilience than you would with a dedicated server - if you have a hardware failure, a dedicated box is stuffed and you need to build another server to get up and running...with a virtual, you just boot the virtual server image on a different physical box and you're away.

I would echo Ed's comments about whether you would really need a "standalone" solution, although if it's cheaper than your current shared hosting it's something of a no-brainer. That said, if your current providing is a managed solution and you're moving away from that, it would probably be cheaper to look at an unmanaged shared solution than an unmanged VPS/dedicated server...
