Recall associated with DSG

Featured Replies

I am on business in Hong Kong at the moment but my wife has received a call notifying of a recall for my March 09 CR 170 Dsg Superb - something to do with the gearbox. Anyone else know anything about this please? Or is it as I am known to tow with the Skoda fiited tow bar system?

The letter reads as follows:

SAFETY ACTION - Skoda Octaviall, Superb II Control unit of direct shift gearbox

Dear Sir or Madam

I am writing to you personally to advise that your Skoda is subject to an official safety recall programme. We regret that this should be necessary so early in the life of your vehicle, but as a responsible manufacturer your safety and peace of mind is of the highest priority to us.

At Skoda we pride ourselves on producing vehicles of the highest possible quality, continually checking their performance and operational reliability. This rigorous monitoring has, to our regret, identified that the gearbox control unit may read the clutch temperature incorrectly. This would activate the gearbox protection function. This protection function operates as follows: the gearbox warning light flashes, the vehicle jerks, the engine torque falls, the clutch is opened (there is no transmission).

Skoda would like to examine your vehicle to ensure that this situation is avoided, which will be carried out completely at our cost and with the minimum of inconvenience to you. All you need to do is contact the Skoda Retailer most convenient to you to arrange a suitable time for the work to be done. Your nearest retailer can be found at www.skoda.co.uk, or by calling 0845 7745745. If your retailer identifies that repair work is required, it will take around an hour to complete.

This request is made under the terms of the Code of Practice on Vehicle Safety Defects. The Code is monitored by the Department for Transport (VOSA) who have authorised the use of DVLA name/address information.

Hope that helps. It's obviously nothing to do with towing, as I don't tow at all.

Thanks Ray, that awswers imy question completely and means I shouldn't be spending too much time at the garage again. All I now have to do is to get home from Hong Kong via BA, this weekend, thank goodness the strike is off!

In other words they have a bad batch of Mechatronic units to resolve.

According to my dealer, it's only a software upgrade.

I too had notice of the recall. I can confirm it was for a potential Software Update for the DSG Gearbox. Mine was one of the first registered UK Superbs. It subsequently proved that mine was not in need of the upgrade. Took 30 minutes to do.

Happy Christmas to all Briskodians..........Eat Drink and be Merry..............and if you do dont drive!

Hi:

I believe this is a software upgrade designed to address a known build fault with the wiring in DSG transmissions. This recall follows a similar one in the US (but 2 months later!) following investigation of serious incidents reported by oowners to the NHTSA (the US version of our own VOSA agency). I now await the next DSG recall - there was another following this particular one in the US. I raised this issue on the Octavia forum some months ago and frankly got abused by some of the "experts" on this forum for my trouble. Its nice to be vindicated.

For those who are not aware of the details behind this I reproduce below the fault/incident report from the NHTSA website:

“ FROM NHTSA WEBSITE - Defect Investigation PE09035

VOLKSWAGEN IS RECALLING CERTAIN MODEL YEAR 2009 AND 2010 PASSENGER CARS MANUFACTURED BETWEEN SEPTEMBER 2008 AND AUGUST 2009. THE WIRING HARNESS OF A TEMPERATURE SENSOR IN THE DIRECT SHIFT GEARBOX (DSG) MAY HAVE CONNECTOR WIRES THAT WERE INSUFFICIENTLY CRIMPED. WITH INSUFFICIENTLY CRIMPED CONNECTOR WIRES, A TEMPERATURE SENSOR HAS THE POTENTIAL TO FALSELY DETECT A HIGH GEARBOX OIL TEMPERATURE, CAUSING THE TRANSMISSION TO ABRUPTLY SHIFT TO NEUTRAL. IF THIS HAPPENS, THE SELECTOR LEVER POSITION INDICATOR WITHIN THE INSTRUMENT PANEL WILL FLASH. IN ADDITION, THE "DEPRESS BRAKE PEDAL" INDICATOR LIGHT WILL BE ILLUMINATED, ALERTING THE DRIVER TO APPLY THE BRAKES.

Consequence:

THE ABRUPT SHIFT TO NEUTRAL COULD LEAD TO A CRASH WITHOUT WARNING.

Remedy:

VOLKSWAGEN WILL REPROGRAM THE TRANSMISSION CONTROL MODULE WITH UPDATED SOFTWARE FREE OF CHARGE. THE RECALL BEGAN ON OCTOBER 20, 2009. OWNERS MAY CONTACT VOLKSWAGEN AT 1-800-822-8987. “
