Glow plug indicator flashing

Featured Replies

Hi All.

Have purchased my wife a 2005 Fabis VRS since she likes her 1.4 8 valve and wanted the same car with a bit more go- it certainly has that!!!.

Anyway wanting to pick your brains on a problem, the GLOW PLUG indicator comes as normal when ignition comes on but then continues flashing after the engine has started.

It starts perfectly without any misfire even with our present very cold weather but then carries on flashing even after the engine has reached a reasonable temperature or is stopped and started again.

No other fault codes appear or any other symptoms.

Any advice will be gratefully received, thanks in advance.

Dennis

Have you actually had the car scanned for faults?

The flashing glow plug light can be numerous things, an easy one to check for is the brake light switch, do the brake lights work? if not the switch on the pedal will be at fault. If they are working fine then it's best to get a VCDS scan done.

Thanks, will check brake lights and follow your advice.

Yup! It'll be the Brake switchemoticon-0148-yes.gif

Agreed. Our old 1.9 TDi did this and it was the brake switch. Get a friend/assistant to put their foot on the brake pedal while you see what's going on at the back. If the lights aren't behaving as they should be then it's definitely the brake switch. It's a cheap enough job to get done, or have a search on this forum and there are instructions on how to do it yourself (just be careful not to damage the new one whe you fit it - they're easily broken apparantly)

Thanks for your help, will be checking it today, funny that, I'm restoring a 1954 morris minor and that has a problem with the brake light switch but that does not have a flashing light on the dash panel to confuse things!!!

So far my impression of the VRS is that it is a fantastic undervalued car, if reliability is good my wife shall be keeping it for many years and maybe I will buy one for myself. One of the vehicles I drive is a 16 year old Volswagen transporter with a 1.9 turbo diesel engine it has done 175000 miles and still going strong on the original clutch.

Once again thanks for your advice.

You need to talk to Moggytech on here.

Another Morris Minor being saved  Probably a split screen if it's a 1954.

Excellent, and good luck.

An update.- Wife got car repaired, cost £30 apparently the brake light switch only cost £7 and had been redesigned.

So you were all correct she had no brake lights - shame the flashing glow plug wasn't more indicative - Maybe morse code.

The morris is a spitscreen with cheese grater style grill - fine car, performance fantastic if not in a hurry.

Cheers

Thanks for the update, and yes it's a crazy way to tell you the brake light switch is out, by flashing the glow plug lamp

No such drama with a Moggy though, first clue is someone rear ends you.
