Problem Finding First Gear

Featured Replies

I have problems finding first gear sometimes in the Octy. Its not that frequent, prob about 4 times in last 3 weeks, but its very annoying.

Is this a common fault with the 5 speed gearbox?

Should i quiz the dealer about it?

Maybe its just me, but i don't think this should be happening in a 2003 car!! :(

Problems getting into first (eg obstructive syncromesh) or finding first (eg linkage/gate)?

Seems to go from nuetral about halfway up and then is blocked by something. Doesn't grind (doesn't get that far).

I usually have to go into second and then back into first.

Its a pain in the A*** when im waiting to pull out of a junction.

Do you know what it is from this description??

sounds like a doddgy reverse light switch to me

JD, what age is your car? If it is still under Skoda warranty you may be better taking it to a Skoda dealer rather than to the VW place you bought the car.

ask them to look at the reverse light switch

William,

I'm going to phone Mervyn Stewart today or tomorrow about it. I don't know what the various Skoda dealers in the north are like. Could you recommend? who do you deal with?

Has anyone heard of this on any other Octavias, or is it a one off?

Big K has - and he's been servicing/repairing Skodas ever since he left school...

have the same problem with mine, will speak to the dealer the next time i take the car for a service and mention the reverse light switch... thanks K

I get that problem every now and again also

I have spoken to other VAG drivers (VW, Audi etc) and they seem to experience similar problems with first gear.

I don't think i will bother taking it into the dealers. I will just add that to my list of complaints (mainly creaks and rattles) when i go for my next service.

make sure you tell them when booking it in that you have "other" issues with things, i have been to other dealers (not skoda) and had them refuse to do work that i hadnt told them about till handing the keys over cause they apparently didnt have time to look at them.

just to save you anymore agro.
