Number plate removal

Featured Replies

Hey,

Just wondering what the best method would be to remove the rear stuck on number plate, i dont really just want to rip it off incase i damage the paint or something! Why i hear you asking, well i got a (cheap) private plate for xmas and i need to put it on lol :)

Any ideas welcome? Maybe warm water and then something to cut the sticky pads with?

Cheers,

Dave

hairdryer to warm the plate up, and some sort of plastic lever to lift the plate

To remove my old bolted on one, i slipped a cloth behind it and just snapped the bugger off. Then got the molegrips out to remove the bolts, although one was too rusted to the nut behind to come out so i left it lol

To remove a sticky pad one, drop some dental floss down around it then pull from the bottom to cut through the pads, no damage, just lots of residue. Pain to remove, but hairdryer should help

If Dental Floss is not strong enough use fishing line and drag across with a sawing motion

I would recommend warm water . . I used this to remove the badges on my last car and it worked a treat.

Like everyone says, use a hairdryer to soften the pads and when sufficiently warm, you will find that the plate lifts off easily.

Get hold of industrial strength solvent cleaner which is quite cheap from a builders' merchants and the residue from the old stickies can be wiped away easily.

Then thoroughly clean the area where the new pads are going to be placed and then use the hairdryer again to warm up the area before positioning the new pads.

Preparation is everything and don't fit the new pads if the temperature is less than 50 degrees unless you warm up the area with the hairdryer first.

Don't use cheap sticky pads. The best ones I have used come from: http://www.craigsplates.com/accessories/

If you want a proper job done, don't cut any corners, do it right the first time!

Cheers...
